Did you give the head to a machine shop? You need to have it checked for trueness, and to get the valves reseated.

You should stick with gasket intended for the motor. The S60R also has different plugs designed to go with the revised head, doesn't mean you should use them.

Haven't dropped head off yet, just waiting for them to open up again...Interesting about the head gasket thanks, may as well go for the IPD kit for $105.00

Also I guess these pipes will hook up to the radiator, can anybody tell me what they are for, I haven't jacked it up yet to see where they go..I'm thinking oil cooler ?

Right you are. They are oil cooler lines that go to that side of the radiator. They're just like the transmission cooler lines at the other end of the radiator - one goes to the upper end, the other to the lower end.

Ok thanks,

Do they cool the engine oil or tranny oil? As this car is a manual I didn't expect to find transmission cooler lines...are they only on a turbo model ?

Just trying to work out if I need a turbo version radiator ! or can I get away with a non turbo one.

You really need to get yourself a DVD copy of VADIS, this will save you a lot iof time and mistakes and having to come back for your daily question!

Not that we don't welcome it but you will find VADIS to be very helpful in putting this thing back together properly

Engine oil only and turbo models only .

Tranny cooler lines would be on the other side fo the car if you had a auto .

Also make sure to zip tie them or worm gear clamp them on after you install them on the rad.

the clips if not new have a tendency to pop off.

Justin and others can chime in here...

IIRC you can buy them on eBay or even... from a file sharing site - not that I condone this activity :)

VADIS = Volvo Aftersales Diagnostics and Information System

Understand the latest is circa 2005 and works on Win XP (not sure about Vista though...)

After that Volvo went to VIDA = Vehicle Information & Diagnostics for Aftersales :)

G'day Darren,

Just stumbled across your post, your right, what a find!!! These are seriously rare over here, and to find one in a junkyard! Just thought I'd post a quick one to let you know I have a sister-ship to your car :D, exact same everything and she's in great nick. I bought her down in Canberra 4 years ago after much wishing and waiting. I pretty much know it inside out by now so if you have any questions or want to see one that's completely original for ideas of parts and such, don't hesitate to give us a buzz. I live in Epping in Sydney. I've got a friend who works for Alto Parts who is real handy for O/E stuff you can't source from the states.

What an exciting project though, can't wait to see another Saff on the road!!

Best of luck,

Nick.

For second hand parts I found prices tended to be cheaper from wreckers in Adelaide and Brisbane/Gold Coast than Sydney or Melbourne. I rang around for a second heater/air conditioner fan motor (couldn't get one from the USA, as the mounting hole pattern is different between RHD and LHD). The fan motor ranged in price from $110 (A Allans in Brisbane) to $250 from a few Sydney wreckers. The local Volvo wreckers in Melbourne (Berry Motor Group) quoted $225. I ended up getting it shipped from City Dismantlers in Adelaide for $165 plus about $19 postage (COD to pay for postage), as they assured me it came from an S70 that had done about 80000km. It was well wrapped and works great so far.

Good luck with the rebuild.

Hey Richard

Thanks for the contact details brother !!

You were right on Melbourne being very expensive for parts, I got a quote on a bonnet, grill, two front guards, bumper with support ect, radiator support, and intercooler for $3000 delivered from a 2.4T v70

I can buy a complete running T5 for $6000 in carsales.com !

Lets just say I've been going on to the pickles damaged auctions website of late to find a suitable doner car...

Regards Daz

PS what model version V70 do you have ?

I Daz,

I have a 98 V70R auto. It is red (I don't know the exact name of the colour). I guess I should work out how to put it in my signature.

May also be worth looking at Manheim Fowles for wrecks as well.

The thread is getting on a bit in age but I haven't been back here for a while and couldn't help notice some aussie R's appear!

I was beginning to think there weren't any of these left on the road in Australia. I have only ever seen one more up here in Brisbane which was black. There are a few of the later body shape ones about though.

I attached a photo of a track day me and a friend of mine went to a Lakeside as for some reason I have no other photos of it?!

Have you had your's on a track? It was abit hairy being auto and all but it sat in the corners like it belonged there. It is bog standard and has since had the head done as we discovered an oil leak from the passenger (RHD) side rear corner of the head gasket. My guess is it was weeping before I coaxed it round the track at speed and then went out in protest. Oh well. Needed a freshen up anyway at 140K. Looking forward to colder temps coming up :D
