Can you run a scan tool on it?

It'd almost be a sweet way to get out of running an EGR on a smog state car... but if it doesn't show the EGR at all on the scan codes then you'll still be dickered.

The UK ECU? It's just a standard Volvo ECU, so you can do anything to it.

Euro cars don't have the 2nd 02 or the EGR, so you won't throw any codes or anything. It's like it doesn't even exist, just like on the 96+ cars.

When you go to get smogged it won't matter because again there will be no codes. They don't penalize people with 96+ cars because there's no EGR right?

No, but my 95 has one. CA knows that so its going to look for it when they plug the smog machine into it (I JUST went through this last week to register the car). I kinda answered my own question with out realizing it... it wont throw a code but it wont show up as "there" during the smog test either.

It would be fine. You have an EGR that they can see with their own eyes. They will plug into the ECU and no codes (because ECU doesn't even know about EGR). Viola. Trust me, the REF has no way of knowing what's enabled or disabled in the ECU. They just plug into the OBD2 port and check for diagnostic codes. If no codes, pass.

That would be the idea. What you need to check first is the car 'as standard' with no mods etc. Plug in the OBD2 tool and check the 'CONTINOUS' tests section. If it does not list the EGR valve then things will be okay. The test garage will have an overview of the car they are testing and it might make reference to checking the 'non-continous' & 'continous' test results. If they look in and do not even see the EGR test result if it should be there, and they are switched on, they may go loooking deeper.

If there is no reference to the EGR, well you are on the home run. I'd be very interested in the results of your/any findings on this from a personal standpoint.

True, I would like to know as well.

Someone else on here will have to test it though, as my state does not do testig like that (they use a exhaust gas analyzer on a dyno).

Yep this is how CA does it. Its going to LOOK for the EGR operating correctly via OBDII. I doubt most smog techs actually know what the EGR looks like under the hood.

You can't really even see the thing under the intake manifold anyway.

The EGR inlet to my manifold was clogged with coked oil... Did I do a bad thing by unplugging it?

That's why EGRs are stupid.

Turbo cars are usually super low emmissions anyways.
