Headlight Wipers Removed

The Stig

Recommended Posts

Finally got down to business and removed both the passenger and the driver's side wipers.

For those who are looking to do it, the driver's side is dead easy - just remove the two bolts and push. The passenger side, however, is brutal..

First, you need to remove both sets of headlights, turn signals, and the trim. Then, go about unbolting the black plastic piece to which the headlights and other things screw in to (it's the big piece that spans the entire width of the car) - remember, you need to do all of it - i.e. both sides. Finally, pull it out enough for you to be able to push back the wiper unit so that the metal wiper arm disappears from view (inside of that cut-out hole), and then basically pivot the entire wiper unit OVER that black plastic ECU connector with some brute force (i.e. pull it up and over it). It's not pretty; however, it works. I wish I had pictures to show, but it was down and dirty, and I didn't have my camera with me.

But in any event, it can be done. The key is unbolting the black plastic piece and pulling it forward to allow you room to pivot the wiper unit and wiper arm.

Cheer,

Peter

Hi guys, here are some pics as promised.

I don't have on the black jewels right now because they're being warrantied (condensation problems)

Anyhow, I didn't plug the holes - I replaced the entire stock trim with another piece of trim that you can get from your Volvo dealer without the wiper holes or that little notch for the wiper arm rest. I bought that, had them painted, and voila:

Looks nice and clean man, but am I missing something? Where are your Jewels? Oh btw, I'm talking about your headlights ;)

<edit> Nm, I'm a retard ...

:D No worries, everyone had been asking me that locally.

The main reason I did it was because I thought it obscured my jewels a bit, and also I was worried the wipers could potentially damage the glass. I could have just unplugged the motor, but I thought this looked nicer. If anyone is considering doing it, I say go for it. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can. :)

Yes, I saw that ... hence the edit. Darn eyes are failing me.

Anyways, Petr is that black piece you're talking about the actual front header? If so I can see that being a real pain to remove. Hey at least you'll have the wipers in case you ever want to re-install them, lol.

Hmmm, my right headlight arrived broken internally. I had to repair it myself. :( Where did you get yours that you could warranty them?

The black piece is that thick, study front fascia/support that pretty much everything up front bolts on to (i.e. the horns, the headlights, etc.). Is that called the front header?

It's actually not that bad to remove. IIRC, there are two bolts on each corners by the turn signals, three across the middle behind the bumper, and two T-25 screwed that attach to the radiator setup from above. Remove all of those, and you should have enough wiggle room to pull the piece forward enough to be able to slide the motor back and out above the ECU connector piece. You might also want to bend forward the three pieces of metal across the middle (behind the bumper) that the three bolts across the middle attach to, since the serve as an impediment to pulling the black piece forward.

I know, I hate the build quality! I got them on a special order through EST (eurosporttuning), and Frank has been kind enough to get them warrantied on my behalf.

Sorry to hear about your jewels man, that sucks. I've been meaning to ask you where you got them ... I see from Frank. Were these the first-run production lamps that Gregg had problems with as well? I've been talking to George lately about the ones he sells. He adverts them as ECE and I've been trying to see if they have a "true" ECE beam pattern (sharp horizontal cut-off w/ a 15 degree right hand flare). I did some searching here and ran accross your post of beam patterns after you installed HIDs. It looks to me that your's were originally DOT beam pattern before you retrofitted the HID's ... sound accurate?

I was pissed about it when I got them. I didn't use EST. I was going to do just what you did to get them through EST, then VPT had the group buy on them, so I went that way.

My left/right adjustment was broken. It was totally seperated from the light bezel, so the light would swing side to side freely. I couldn't find any adhesive that would bond the plastic together again, so I ended up using a spring to hold the light back against the adjustment. That way the adjuster still works.

I also don't like the pattern they put out. I have had to do several things to compensate for that.

Exactly, mine were first production run just like Gregg's. From what I understand, later versions had less condensation problems due to a change in manufacturing technique, at least according to George/Gregg.

Actually, mine are H1/ECE with H1 HIDs. I did remove the center piece from the lights in order to get better light output (which might change things a bit). The cutoff is actually reasonably good in real life, but anytime you retrofit, short of going with projectors or a reflector system specifically designed for HIDs, there will never be a perfect cutoff pattern.
