Water Pump Leaking?

Hi all,

Car is an 1995 850 T5. 5sp Manual, 142000kms.

Its been a while since I posted as all has been going well with the 850. That was until I decide to try and trace a coolant leak that was annoying me for a while. I have been losing approx 300ml per 1000kms and when I stopped the car you could smell coolant from within the engine bay.

I took the slash gaurd off and could see that coolant was leaking from the bottom radiator hose at the radiator connection. Easy fix, no problems!!!

While I was under the car I could also see coolant on the subframe towards the rear of the engine on the timing belt side. I immediately thought water pump is leaking.

My question is if the pump is leaking is that the spot most likely to show signs of the leak??

Has any body had similar symptoms or leaks in the same spot. Are there any tests to determine failure or is leakage the sign???

Thanks

Stew. B)

I have photos but cant work out how to post. Any tips???

I had a mysterious slow coolant leak several years ago that had me stumped. I thought for certain it was my water pump.

I purchased the dye and black lamp leak detector kit. The problem for my car was a bad seal at the thermostat housing ( seal incorrectly installed).

The thing is this, coolant leaking from say the thermostat housing will drip/rundown and appear to come from the bottom of the water pump.

In your case- may very well be the pump.

Good luck and happy Easter !

I had a leak that was dripping down onto the front right axle, and it turned out that I had a bad water pump.

The leak was gushing so fast that on the way to take her in to get serviced, coolant got onto the serpentine belt, and it snapped.

Look at the feed line off the coolant reservoir it connects to a metal pipe on the back of the motor and does leak there resulting in coolant where you stated. also the block drain is on the back of the block but I rarley see that leak. You can pull the timing cover off and have a look at the pump?

This can be misleading - as it was in the case of my car where I pulled the T-Belt cover and coolant was seen dripping from the bottom of the WP.

With the light and leak dye I easily traced the leak up from the WP to the Thermostat housing.

In my case, the leak was very slow and I could not detect it at the source without the dye kit.

Hopefully - the repair is as simple as mine was.

Thanks for the replys guys. I pulled the timing belt cover off and had a look at the pump and appears o.k. The feed line off the coolant reservoir and the block drain are not leaking so no probs there. The thermostat seal maybe the problem but will probably have to purchase the dye etc to try and detect this. However for a couple of dollars I may just replace the seal at the thermostat housing and see if this makes a difference. Will keep you guys informed.

Cheers
