Guest RK from OR
For those who are thinking of getting new speakers for the rear deck in their 854s but want to keep a stock look, here's what I have done.Last year I installed a Nakamichi deck, a pair of Boston NX 57 (5.25 in) speakers for the doors, and an Alpine amp. The whole thing sounds much better than stock. I didn’t change the rear speakers mainly because of the strange size of the OE speakers. I want to keep the installation as simple as possible without cutting the rear deck or the metal underneath. I didn’t want a sub because of trunk space issue and I don’t really need that much bass. Plus, after I added an amp, the rear OE speakers did sound a little bit better so I just left them alone. Now I finally decided to change the rear spkrs. I bought a pair of Infinity 5x7/6x8 but they were too small. So I returned them and got a pair of 6x9 but the magnets were too big for the OE box. Then I remembered the Boston NX series use Neodymium magnets which are much smaller than the conventional magnets. So I bought a pair of Boston NX97 (6x9) and they fit almost perfectly. The 4 mounting screws, the height, the magnets size all fit perfectly. The only problem is the OE box is a bit too small for 6x9s to be mounted IN the box. It also required a plate for spkrs to mount on to separate the front and the back wave (the OE spkrs and the mounting surface are built together). I went to Home Depot and bought a piece of plywood (1/8 in thick) for $1.50. After spending over an hour measuring and cutting the ply wood, I finally mounted the spkrs onto the box with the plywood in between. The sound is awesome. The sound is more balanced, has better bass, and cleaner vocals and highs. Only then I realized the OE spkrs really suck. If I knew it would sound this good, I wouldn’t have waited that long. Now I just need to paint the plywood black and put something to fill the gap. I took some of the pictures but how do you post pictures here??
