Bing! Need Creative Help With Monitor Location...

Bing (or others),

I'm planning an ICE project for the V70, and I need some creative opinions for the rear monitor(s), because movies really need to be visible in the rear for the kid(s). Here are my observations/limitations so far:

1. Headrests - I really, really don't want to cut into that suede. If these headrests were removable, maybe I could make some duplicates from another Volvo, and save the suede headrests in the garage, but I don't think that's an option. Is it?

2. Overhead - Will the headliner hold up an overhead monitor? The sunroof seems like it takes up an awful lot of overhead real estate, and the headliner itself looks kind of flimsy.

3. Gooseneck Mount - I have one of these on my S70 (behind the center console), but I was hoping to do something different this time around. I even thought of mounting from the B-Pillar where the seatbelt attaches, but that's pretty visible and probably just begs for someone to put a hammer through the glass and grab the monitor.

I'm really brainstorming right now, before I get started with anything, so thanks in advance for any/all suggestions.

For one, headrest monitors are a theft magnet. You'll have problems with this in running wires to the control device also which is a big negative and also the price can get quite high. The only real positive here is the look if you're really good at working with them.

For overheads, the one problem that I can think of, is that you're going to only have one screen. Running wires will be easy since you'll have a fair amount of room to work with behind the headliner (even though the motor for the sunroof is there its not that big) and running wires will be much easier. You may even be able to tap a hot positive and negative line off of the motor itself. Also, this may save you money if you get an all-in-one unit.

For goose necks, I'd have to say no. They're not too attractive, and still have the theft magnet idea involved. On the positive they are easy to wire but here IMO the positives outway the negatives.

So you think an overhead may work? Is there something up there that I can screw to to hold up the monitor and housing, without jacking up the sunroof operation? I guess Bing's gonna leave me hanging, until he has showoff pics that don't answer my question anyway. :D

And Brian, I can understand your fascination with Ms. Lohan, but I hope you're a lot younger than I am...

Just take the headliner down and put a screw fastener behind it. Thats all you'd need to fasten it to. And yes, I bet I am much younger than you are. 18 to be exact.

i think you shoudl try to fiberglass a whole new console and put a screen in that. Aah man the custom jobbers would love this :) It would look sweet and you could tailor it to be exactly how you want it... ie dvd player any gaming console

Ok, hear me out..

People are obviously concearned with putting monitors in the headrests.... but they are a good spot.. so why not have a headrest skin made up? Have it made so that it just zips up over the headrest.. you could have it made in alcantara or whatever you want..

I mean, you're not going to be watching DVD's all the time, and when you're not, you just put the cover over the headrest.. It's be pretty stealth, and you still get the benefit of having the good placement for the rear passeners.. just a thought..
