Overheating After Dealer Service - What Gives?

The Stig

Recommended Posts

About a week ago we serviced our 1993 940 turbo at the Volvo dealer, and amongst other things they replaced the clamps on coolant hoses.

The car was then immediately loaned to a friend for a few days; apparently the next day the "check engine" light came on, but this was unfortunately ignored by the person borrowing the car. A few days later (i.e. today), we got back the car.

I drove the car for the first time right now. The heater no longer works. While driving, if I drive below 2,000 RPM, the engine temperature is ok, but if I go over 2,000 RPM, the temperature needle heads towards the red line. Also, the fan that is cooling the engine is working like crazy even with the car off. Obviously the car is overheating. Needless to say, we took the car back to the dealer right away.

When they opened the hood and looked at the coolant, the impression I got was that all the coolant was gone. I left the car for them to examine and determine what was wrong.

The dealer called me later and told me that in the back of the engine there was a leak, and that as a result the coolant was leaking.

I am not sure if I am to believe them or not. If it leaked, where was it? I did not see any trace of antifreeze under the car or on the engine.

When you need to replace the clamps on the oil cooler hose, do you need to drain the coolant? May be the mechanic later forgot to replenish it?

Also, is my engine now damaged for good? Will this shorten the life of the engine?

Many thanks for your replies,

Peter

something similar happened to my POS Neon before. i kept adding coolant not 50:50 mix but the overheat warning beep and warning light disappeared and came back in a day or two. don't know what happened but the car just keep drinking all the coolant. after doing the same thing like four times, the problem solved itself. don't ask me why.

OK for starters...the oil cooler has nothing to do with your coolant loss....It does seem odd that it was just there and they did not pick up on the leak..however it may purley be coincidental? Hard to say but as for the other symptoms it was because the coolant was low. Don't jump to conclusions just because it was in for service. Where did they say it was leaking? On the back of the engine, on your car there is nothing there but a few hoses(heater) and a metal pipe the comes around the back. Just keep a cool head it may purley be coincidental like I said. Just see what they have to say? I doubt the engine is damaged ...you could sink that motor to the bottom of the bay pull it out a year later and I bet it would run. That's good stuff! ;) Probably a heater hose...give your friend hell for not respecting a "borrowed" vehicle! ;)

It very well could. On most 940's they have an oil cooler that circulates coolant around the oil to warm up the oil faster and to stabilize temps.

If the technician did replace the clamps on the oil cooler unit he may or may not have drained the coolant depending on how he did it.

Sorry to hear about what happened, that's a real bummer.

Thanks a lot for the replies guys. Apparently, one of the coolant hoses wasn't properly fastened from what I understand, and that was the culprit. The dealership took full responsibility for it, and it looks like the car is fine.

I totally agree though, warning lights should not be ignored! I think my friend got the message. Just glad there wasn't any damage.
