gaterp
Okay this will be pretty boring. So I have had my 1996 854 R for 2 weeks now and put like 63 miles on it. So after getting it all cleaned up and looking good I took it to work today. So at lunch me and my buddy in his sweet s70 T5 did a little 0-100. So we started off and he was about half a car length in front of me until we hit around 50 mph. I than started to pull away from him and I hit 100 and slow it down and won by about 2 car lenghts. Not sure if he let off a little soon or not. But anyway it was pretty fun.
maiku
S70's are a bit heavier, but 850R has a bit more top endwould be a close race
gaterp
so this is pretty much typical between these 2 cars ?

the ünderstüdy
someone on sunday with a R ahd better race me, i wanna put this to the test, if my t5 loses by 2 lengths oh man im gonna be pissed
Gregg
The S70 T5 is rated as the exact same weight range as an 850R, same drive ratio, and the S70 T5 makes the same HP and 22 ft/lbs more torque! So how is it that the 850R is expected to be faster (S70 T5 also has bigger turbo; 16T>15G)??
turbobrick
hmm i'd like to hear those results, i was under the impression the s70's were like 200 - 300 pounds heavier
Gregg
Ok, just found this from the Volvo owner's manuals:1996 Volvo 850:Curb weight USA Canada 850 sedan 3120-3250 lbs (1415-1519 kg) 1385-1520 kg1998 Volvo S70:Curb weight USA Canada S 70 3150-3330 lbs (1428-1510 kg) 1435-1510 kgSo, assuming the high end of each weight range is for a loaded turbo model (i.e. 850R and S70 T5), the weight difference is only 80lbs between the two. This doesn't seem like much, considering the fact that there is sometimes that much, if not more, of a difference between the weights of two drivers. StickThatClutch
Maybe the one with less boost leaks wins? This is an interesting one to think about. I'd be curious what's faster a ME 4.4 car or ME 7 car in 70 series trim as well.

Kibim
If it helps, my stock S70R is posting better 1/4mile times than stock 850R's. I have LSD tho, so I guess that's an advantage off the line.
gaterp
yeah , I was thinking he let off at the end. He would not tell though. I'm pretty sure it would have been alot closer. He is playing with me, Man what a friend
matt1122
100 lbs = about an effective 17hp loss IIRC?So 80 lbs = about a 12hp loss? There's also a minor difference because of the tires/suspension. The R's sport suspension and tires will probably bog it down ever so slightly from a stand still compared to a stock suspension S70, though you of course get better traction and handling as a trade off.Another difference is the tuning, by the way. The newer models seem tuned to get moving quicker. My T-5R definitely feels SLOW when it just starts moving, but my much less powerful V70 XC moves nicely away from lights without letting the other cars get a little ahead first... might have to do with the 5 speed though.
