aikitect
Looking to chip my car and I keep getting hints that a bigger downpipe is a good thing, however, I do not know what they do or how important they are when considering a chip. Also, where are good places to get a downpipe? Thanks. Chopper
A downpipe is part of your exhaust. specifically it is the part of the exhaust the occurs before the cataylitic converter. Thus it is the piece between the turbo and the catayltic converter. A larger diamter pipe (and higher flow cataylitic converter) will allow more exhaust gas to pass out more quickly, allowing more flow and taking more heat away from the engine more quickly. If you chip you should also look into a catback exhuast (the rest of the system after the catatylitic converter), as that is more commonly recommended for a standard chip upgrade. BlackT5
A downpipe is the fron section of the exhaust pipe. It connects to the exhaust outlet on the turbo and runs about half the length of the car. It usually has the catlytic converter and a flex connection. It is quite expensive to get an aftermarket one. There is the stainless BSR one from www.engstrom.net , the JT one is aluminized steel. AutoX47 sells them http://www.ypc-inc.com/index.php?s=parts&m...el=Exhaust&id=1 Odell is also having some made, look for the thread in the performance forum. aikitect
Thanks guys.I think that I will stick with just a chip for now. The car has dual exhaust stock, but I read on Swedespeed where the iPd exhaust system adds about 12 HP.
ginkof
Well what a downpipe is has been explained already. About getting an exhaust system, it is mandatory. When you chip your car your turbo will be running significantly more boost which means more air is going to be going through your exhaust system. A lot more heat is going to be created by your turbo so the hot exhaust gasses must be exhaled out of your system faster before damage is caused. Stock exhaust system are made to be quiet and made to satisfy what the car needs when it is stock and no more then that. i would highly recomend getting atleast a catback exhaust system before a downpipe and make sure its stainless steel. There are some companies that sell steel ones with some covering but that covering burns off with the very high temperatures that your exhaust system handles and you wil eventually rust holes into your system. g'luck with that and you will definitely enjoy the chip!
