All the salespeople at all the big branches say they're 6x9s. A lot of the people in these forums think they're 5x7s. The Specials and Reviews section thinks they're 6x9s. what?!

I really hope they're 6x9s cause I can't find a decent set of 5x7s anywhere? Can I just tap some holes to make 6x9s fit?

HELP!

They're really an oversized 5x7 speaker. Basically the magnet size and mounting plate size of a 5x7, but the cone area of 6x8 speaker.

If you look at the speaker itself, the paper cone extends the very edge of the mounting plate. Most, if not all aftermarket speakers usually have a plastic ring or spacer, pretty much, around the outside edge of the speaker cone.

The stock Volvo rear deck speakers do produce a decent amount of bass, for what they are. However, much of this bass that is felt is distortion, and, therefore, they do not produce crisp & clear sound in the higher frequency range.

You can find decent 5x7s but you will have to do some searching on the internet. Not many audio shops have a wide selection of good 5x7 speakers. You could also go Doug's route and mount some 6.5" speakers back there with an adapter piece. 6.5" speakers have a larger surface area than a regular 5x7 speaker, so if you are looking for the replacement speakers to keep up with the bass production from the stock speakers, you should go this route. Otherwise, look good and hard for a powerful 5x7 speaker (which may require some shelf cutting to fit the magnet) or a good 6x9 speaker (which will require cutting as well).

Of course, if you are looking for good clean bass, then get a subwoofer and amp, and dump the rear deck speakers. They are pretty much useless once you get a sub.

Greg, if you did something similar to what I did, you could mount any variety of speakers. As long as the magnets will fit in the holes in the shelf, the speaker shape doesn't matter. Hell you could even do flush mounted tweets all the way across.
