Abs And Trac Light

Coming home today from work, my ABS and TRACoff lamps came on. At the same time, the A/C stopped blowing cold and the A/C lamp started flashing. My first thought was that there had been a current spike. I was thinking alternator or battery. I drove to Advance and they said that their OBD2 scanner was broken, that a pin had come off. I drove across the street to AutoZone. No codes other than the eternal 410 secondary air injection problem that I've had since the beginning of time.

We tested the alternator (while still in the car) and the battery. Both seem fine. I looked at all the fuses that are related to AC, ABS, and TRAC. All fine. Then I decided to see if the ABS was actually working. I got up to ~25mph and tried to lock them up. The petal throbbed the way it's supposed to, and I stopped without incident. Then the lamps went out.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is there something that I'm not thinking of?

Thanks in advance for your help.

super huge problem...

Are you messing with me? Is it really something simple that everyone knows but me, or am I really in danger? If I'm in danger, is it of losing my brakes, or of making something worse?

Thanks again.

No man, it's a big problem.. my light are on in my car.. lot's of other guys' too.

You won't lose your brakes, but TRACS won't work, and I'm not sure if the ABS system won't work when the light is on... perhaps someone can elaborate on that..

but Victor hooks it up man, he's legit.

From 1996 to the present, there is a problem with the circuit boards in the ABS module becoming cracked/halo'd. When this happens you get intermittent contact and sometimes the ABS will work sometimes it won't. Is it dangerous, NO. You still have regular brakes just no ABS or TRACS or STC etc.

The repair is to buy a new module, or use the link above and have it repaired by Victor.

Not trying to be an arsehole here, but rather than sending this guy down the expensive rathole first; perhaps he should make sure that his ignition switch is cool. The sympthoms he describes can also be tracked down to a set of bad contacts in the switch. Its a relatively simple thing to figure out by just wiggling the key about a wee bit and the lights may go off. If they do, done deal and you are out a relatively few bucks for a new ignition switch rather than having to go the ABS unit route. At least, this was the fix when I had the same thing happen on mine.

Cheers,

Not a bad idea, and a cheaper diagnostic, try Bill's method, but if it doesn't work, Victor is here to help ya. :)
