New Hu

Well much thanks to bing_0 for the tutorial on HU installations - i've purchased 4 decks in my car history and always paid to have them installed, but this was a breeze!

I threw in a very decent deck and added the iPod adapter thing from Pioneer and it was simple as pie.

Now i have to figure out why my 6x9s aren't putting out any sound and then i'll be reasonably set.

Just so i know, an aftermarket HU will/should send a signal to all 8 speakers correct?

Also, is there a market at all for used Volvo cass. decks?

And, what will i have to do to get my in dash computer/clock thing working again?

1. there are only 6 speakers (dashboard and front door speakers count as one)

2. toss it up in the for sale section, you never know....

Yes i have speakers in the doors and they work faintly. If it wasn't raining here today i'd take out the 6x9s and check the issues with the magnets, but that might have to wait.

6 or 8 speakers.. whatever, but the wiring to the new HU should be sending a signla to the rear speakers, and it's either a speaker problem or a less likly wiring problem correct?

should be. unless there's some crazy OE amp problem..

edit - did we ever figure out which cars had the AMP in them? cause this is a really confusing topic.

Cool.. i wish i had taken some before and after pics, but didn't.

If anyone with a stock 850 dash with lame wood trim could take a picture of their cass deck and e-mail it to me that would be awesome. I'll sort out my website and put a pic with the new setup on today.

How do you like your Pioneer iPod integration?

I'm sort of new to it, but so far i really dig it. I saw your post in the other thread i made (pre-install), and that's true finding a particular song is awful, but even with over 1500 songs on it now, just doing that on the iPod is pretty bad.

I think when i make some 400 song playlists or what have you it will be awesome, and it means i only have to have a few CD's in the car + and spontaneous media my friends or whomever might provide.

But, so far so good - and install was a breeze - just wire up the yellow with the other two yellows, same deal with the gound and find some place the stick the module, drill out the glove bod and ta-dah!

As i said, i'll post a pick shorty.

According to VADIS, the 4x50W amplifier came in the T-5R, 850R, and Platinum editions. And there is a 4x40W amplifier listed too, but it does not specify which model.

I got this info from the Volvo Owners' Page (1996 models):

Finally, the 850 has a 6-speaker, 80-waft stereo system with a CD-compatible AM/FM/cassette unit and the 850 GLT has an 8-speaker 100-watt system with a CD-compatible AM/FM/full-logic cassette.

The 850 Turbo has the 100-watt, 8-speaker stereo system found in the 850 GLT, the Platinum Limited Edition boasts a 160- watt system complete with a compact disc player, both with antitheft circuitry.

From the 850R specs page: SC-815 Premium Sound System with in dash CD, cassette, eight speakers, 200 watts amplifier, anti-theft coding, pre-wired for Volvo Compact Disc Changer

Ok, this is bothering me now. I am working on a spreadsheet to get all this sorted out for all model years of the 850. Is info needed for the 70 series too?

Yeah, to sum it up, pretty much only the R's have had the amps. I personally have yet to see a factory volvo amp (save the one from my 740)

The rear speakers could be a weak connection (check your purple and green wires) or if you have an amp...

FYI: In the 850 those front two (door and dash) are in fact seperate full range drivers. Although may be different in the S70.
