P0600

Recommended Posts

Having a serious problem with the '01 S40 - 185,000 miles.

The transmission has a WICKED hard shift into reverse and is in limp mode.

It's pretty much undriveable right now.

I'm not sure if it's a mechanical issue or an electronic control issue.

I don't have VIDA, only a ScanGauge II.

The car has been dependable and well maintained.

I did do a series of drain / fills on the transmission with Dex III (per the owner's manual) before I found out that it should have had 3309.

There were 5 drain / fills with Dex III between 147,000 and 173,000 miles.

Then I did a flush (not power flush) and fill with 3309 which has been in the car since (12,000 miles).

So since I got a P0600 code, I'm hoping it's an electronic issue like a CEM or TCU and not a broken transmission.

What do any of you think?

Hey that's what I have lol, it's a serial communication error between the ecu and transmission, not sure exactly how the TCU figures in because I got the code with or without the TCU after the manual swap, TCU just adds the arrow light to the dash. I'd check your harness and pinned connections mechanical wouldn't do it.

However the hard shifting is purely mechanical as something is physically not letting the car shift into reverse.

Oh, it'll go into reverse, it just shifts into reverse very hard. I think it'll break a motor mount if I continue to try.

My gut is telling me that the transmission is shot, but the P0600 code is making me suspicious and I don't want to jump to any conclusions.

All the wire connections looked good and I don't see any frayed wires under the hood. Everything is still in it's factory positions.

How hard was it to remove the transmission? Never had to remove one on a FWD car.

It looks like it could be quite involved.

This sounds like a PNP switch on the way out.

To clean the contacts on the switch and diagnose the issue, with the key in the accessory on position (ignition off) row the gear selector through the gears from 1st through park and back 8-10 times quickly. The heat it generates while moving it rapidly will burn off any residue on the copper contacts and should bring back the shifters ability to go into gear smoothly. If not, it can be in the shift selector miroswitch itself.

Hard engagement in to drive or reverse is most likely the PNP. If you were experiencing hard shifts as well, then i'd look further into the trans itself..

Also, the PNP will engage limp mode and you'll only have 3rd for forward gear.

Thanks.

Ol' Dirty - I'll look up your swap thread and follow along. It's got to be better than Haynes manual.

1Clean - I did do some "rowing", but it can't hurt to do some more at this point. Hadn't thought of the PNP switch. Is that tied into the electronics and might set a CEL code if it fails? Because I haven't had any other codes than the P0600.

As for other hard shifts, no. There haven't been any. It's only when shifting into Reverse while in the limp mode that it bangs into gear.

I took the car out last weekend and everything was normal for about 2 miles. Very smooth as usual and shifted on its own through all the gears just like always. I thought everything was back to normal.

But after those 2 miles, it went limp and had the VERY hard shift into reverse.

By the way, the shifter itself moves easily - or should I say normally. It's the transmission engagement to Reverse when it slams. I don't think it's a gearshift problem.

Just read through your swap thread. Holy cow. That was quite an undertaking. Especially in NA where they were never delivered like that.

I converted a few 140 series from automatic to M40 (4-sp) and M41 (4-sp + OD) but those looked like a walk in the park compared to yours.

Got to say, it's giving me hope to repair my '01 instead of getting rid of the car.

I guess I'll have to start looking for a used auto trans. I'll try Chuck & Eddies since they're pretty close.

Hopefully I'll get it up in the air tomorrow and get the numbers off the transmission.

I suspect it'll have to be an exact match so it doesn't set a CEL.

Can I even expect to replace the transmission without having to reprogram something?

Which gets me thinking.

I'm still not sure if I'm dealing with one problem or two.

Is the P0600 causing the problem or is it a symptom?

Does the transmission itself have a mechanical problem or is it misbehaving because of the P0600?

I'd hate to replace the transmission and find that its a communication problem.

At this point, I still don't know what the problem is.

Edit: Oh yea, I still have to go re-row the selector in hopes that it's a PNP switch. But wouldn't a PNP switch set a code?

Could the PNP switch cause the hard shift into reverse?

Well, I scoped out getting a junkyard transmission.

Chuck & Eddies website shows a couple so I'll go take a look at those and verify that the part numbers are the same.

Not buying yet, but at least want to know if they have the exact part.

Does anyone know if I'll have to do some kind of reprogramming of anything if I install a transmission

that was not original to the car? This probably has me the most concerned.

The actual removal and installation don't look too bad, but patience will be required.

Along with any other parts that break or show wear.

Maybe I can get away with this for under $400.

I think I'm going to cross my fingers and replace the transmission with a used unit. They've got one with 140K, $200 delivered.

Wish the mileage was lower, but I'll roll the dice.

I'll replace the driveshaft seals and grab a case of 3309.

Got to do something. Looking at the car sitting in the driveway is bugging me.

The wife is gone next week so I can leave it in the garage and futz with it nights after work.

I hope this is the right decision. The stupid thing runs so well and I know its history so I'd hate to get rid of it.

Trying to get another 2 years out of it so daughter # 3 can use it as a first car. It'd be perfect.

May call on you Ol' Dirty for advice...
