Sup guys. Just joined the 30forty cause I'm a recent owner of a (US) 2000 volvo s40 1.9t. When I first bought her she was drivin by a teacher at a college since brand new so I'm the 2nd owner. Since then I've done the mods in my sig and sounds and drives much better now that she's all opened up on the intake and exhaust. I want to run a catless exhaust soon but for now the exhaust is staying the same until I upgrade my turbo to 16t. The only restrictive part of my exhaust right now is my stock 1st cat. I recently hit the 1/4 mile in epping,nh on 8/14/15 and ran a time of 16.113@85.16mph. I was really hoping for 15's. The launch was good to me I think, I brake boosted as soon as I staged on the tree and had a few chirps while acclerating in 1st gear. I also manually shifted the stock 4 speed to get the most out of 1st gear but not 2nd gear though like I should have, ugh. Temps were a humid 76 degrees F. I did two runs total. The second run was my best run, I let it cool down for over an hour but still had a very hot intake manifold. I'm confident on a cool night and no heat soak I can dip into the high 15's but staging lines take soo long before I line up ending with a very hot engine, ugh. Next time I go I will have a MBC and a 2.5" exhaust cut-out and will hit a mid 15 is my goal at around 86-87mph.

-First run-

1/8 10.586

MPH 68.00

1000 13.696

MPH 85.36

-Second run-

r/t .156

1/8 10.413

MPH 69.52

I did read though that the transmission itself doesn't like anything over 300hp. I would like to run smaller rims and a drag radial for better acceration because these 4 speeds are geared so long in 1st gear, getting 45mph in 1st right now, lol.

Stall speed is around 2800rpms I believe. I'd be interesting to see a 3500rpm-ish stall, drag tires, and launch control, mmm that would sound beautiful. I'm just thinking out loud. I want to see what gains can be had with a smaller tire. But how small can I go is the question... I'm going for reliability so I cant get to crazy. I guess I just start throwing on random rims I come across and see what size I can get away with.

HardcoreR, have you run your 2001 s40 at the 1/4mile?

Saaweet, thanks 1clean00. Time for a junk yard run this weekend for front rims. Hopefully they have a v70r in the yard too. Even if its not the right flange I can fab one up at work. Cant wait to try out our new miller tig welder when I end up getting a universal fmic. I want to go with 2.5" end pipes.

I have some 17x7 wheels on nitto neogen tires on the cheap if you want.  Wheels weigh about 18lbs a piece.  They're black gloss painted with a blue undercut stripe in the barrel (because Sweden;)

Thanks man but I'm going to invest in a new turbo this weekend along with new oil lines and boost gauge. I just called a local salvage yard and I found a 16t off a 2000 v70 for only $150 bucks. Not one v70r in sight around here, ugh. I wanted a 18/19t but oh well, the 16t will be plenty for I'm looking for. I still have to check its condition, fingers are crossed. :)

For a higher stall speed, you'd surely need a beefed up transmission...  Something built up custom by Level10 would be the best bet, as their trannys are generally regarded as "bulletproof" in the durability sense.  So they can take more abuse and higher stall speeds from the torque converter in them.  Plus you could probably have custom gearing installed as well, and then the tranny wouldn't be your main bottleneck any longer.  As 1clean00 mentioned, some light weight "15 wheels and drag slicks would further help out.  When it comes to a good launch, as little unsprung weight as possible is a good goal.  Rota makes good light weight wheels, but I'd look to something like Rays or offerings from Mackin Industries for some serious light weight wheels.  Think something that's 10lbs.  "15 Rotas in certain styles are around 12lbs per wheel.  Konig also makes some nice light weights.  All in all, the S40 isn't an ideal drag car though, of course neither were Vegas from back in the day, and I've seen some that can beat out most other street cars...  ;)

I also relocated my battery to the trunk in the center behind the spare.  This distributed weight more evenly across the chassis,  although it definitely increase torque steer,  it took 25lbs off the tranny side of the engine.   Plus gave a ton more room for accessories and such.

also,  the trans can't handle that much torque above 300ftlb.

Notice in this clip of my old 14T on 20psi the slight run-on in between gears.  Almost a ghost shift or torque converter slip...  This was on 250hp crank corrected hp and 300ftlb torque.

Thanks guys. I dont want to go into the torque converter, I was more dreaming out loud rather than thinking out loud, lol. These cars would come outta the hole so fast with a 3500 stall, 60' would probably drop .3-.5 seconds with a good launch. I would love to do the relocation of the battery after seeing your pic 1clean00. Looks nice and opened up in there. The fmic is pretty much a NEED after seeing how much time I droppped letting it cool off at the 1/4mile drags. I dropped two tenths a second just letting it cool down. I'm looking for the best of both worlds; a corner sticking machine with a decent 1/4 mile pass(low 14's). :) :)

Yeah, the stock tranny can't handle a lot.  But if getting a custom built up one, it should be able to...  Your bay looks really nice and clean, 1Clean00.  That's what I like about the 60, battery located in the trunk.  In the 40, it opens up the bay space quite a lot!  Great for any type of airbox mods and such.
