Stage 0 and plan questions

I'm new to these forums but have found a lot of great discussion and info so thank u. I own a 03 s40 1.9t ,145k miles, and am new to working on cars/tuning. I'm not looking to race or anything with my family car but have a need for speed and interest in improving my car.

So far in my stage 0 I have:

Replaced spark plugs and coil packs

Replaced ignition coil harness as mine was not good

Replaced fuel filter

Pulled the injectors and cleaned them by using an injector harness hooked up to a battery and syringe tube to run throttle body cleaner through them (worked great)

Changed oil/filter

Replaced brake pads and calipers

New panel air filter

My question is about what to do next. I'm planing on testing the pcv system by making sure I have vacuum.

I'm on my phone and can't see where the edit post button is but to continue I am wondering about upgrading to a cone filter. I read this is possible while maintaining the stock air box. Does anyone have pictures or a how to? Is it even worth upgrading to a cone filter or just go with a knn panel filter? I also read about adding a snorkel to the front spoiler but doesn't it already pull air pretty close to there?

I also read that the turbo has a common problem with an oil leak on the return valve. I was told by the mechanic I took the car to before buying the car that mine has this leak but shouldn't be a problem. It's definitely something I want to fix though but haven't seen any videos or pictures outlining this type of job. Do you guys use the repair manual or have any good resources for this. Ideally after this gets fixed I will add a mbc and gauge. I plan to do some more stuff farther down the line but this is my short term goals. Thanks for reading and sharing your wisdom.

- Definitely do the pcv.

- Clean the idle air control valve.

- Check the hose going to the idle air control valve (it usually is rock hard at this point if it's never been changed)

- Check that upper radiator hose that splits to the thermostat and the reservoir and consider upgrading it or replacing it, it is prone to failures.

- Drop in box filter is usually the way to go. (I use a K&N but there is the "High Flow" one that is blue instead of read I've been looking at).

I know there's a stage 0 thread somewhere I'll try to dig up for ya.

The oil leak on the return line isn't a difficult job with the correct tools.

good how-to on IPD's website explaining the procedure....http://www.ipdusa.com/files/product/225/PI-273%20TURBO%20DRAIN%20PIPE%20SEAL%20INSTALL%20GUIDE.PDF

As for the pcv system.  There are how-to instructions on this site as well,  for the first time you do the service it's best to replace the full kit as to avoid future headaches,  you'll want to allow 4-6hr for the first time.  Once you've done it you can probably cut that time in half depending about how much you like to "clean" everything while apart.

Top tip, make sure to inspect the orifice of the PTC sensor at the turbocharger inlet hose,  they can become sludged with oil blow-by over time and also cause pressure in the system.

Any questions,  feel free to shoot me a private message.  I've done about a dozen of these services over the years.

Thanks for the replays everyone! I forgot to mention I also cleaned the throttle body, tightened the throttle cable, and cleaned the maf. The idle air control valve was replaced two years ago. Worth going in to clean it? Either way I will check the hose going to it and the other hose as well. I've found the oil trap for the pcv system and individual hoses but is there a sku or link to the kit out there to replace everything like u guys are saying? If you find a link to the high flow blue panel filter I'd love to check it out. Haven't seen one like that yet. The turbo oil fix looks pretty easy too. Thanks for the link to that article.

Is this the filter? http://www.carid.com/2003-volvo-s40-air-intakes/afe-pro-5r-air-filter-920190.html

Ipd swlls the entire kit. Its almost 300$. But they sell it. I just finished my 0stage not too long ago, well mostly anyway. The k&n is what i have in a gutted factory airbox. I also did the ss piping from ic to tb, but ive heard the silicon may be slightly better. Either way, throttle response is great. Added red injectors, adjusted wastegate and just did the mbc today (omg). This forum is awesome for help. Everywhere youll see s40concepts.com, the page is dead. This, a mathews volvo and sometmes swedespeed are where the info is. I also bought a haynes manual from ipd. Best tool in the world to have, esp when people arent replying on the forums

Thw entire pcv kit that is

Are these the red fuel injectors everyone is talking about http://www.ipdusa.com/products/10364/121776-fuel-injector-nedcar-s40-v40-2001-2004

Also with the pcv kit it looks like one of the hoses http://www.ipdusa.com/products/11140/115415-pcv-hose-assembly-s40-v40is 185 dollars but the rest of the kit bought individually is much cheaper. i think for purposes of not poking momma bear too much cleaning that hose rather than replacement might be best.

Did u custom the ss piping? The Haynes manual is from the European version right? Do u find many variations because I considered buying it as well. Other than gutting the foam out of the air box did you do any other changes to the cold air intake?

If you go IPD or order that hose specifically make sure you get the right one, there are two possibilities. The hose you linked is for the higher chassis #, it doesn't appear they sell the lower ranged chassis # hose.

See the third image they have up on the kit http://www.ipdusa.com/products/6219/115450-pcv-breather-system-kit-2000-2004-s40-v40-nedcar

Actually, the red injectors i got from an 02 s40 sitting in a local junk yard. But yes they look identical to those on ipd's site. They cost me 40$ and then had them sent out to be cleaned and tested and that was only 125$. As far as the ss ubend, i got it at pep boys. They recently did a whole make over of the store and sell a ridiculous amount of Vibrant tubing. I trimmed one end down with a hack saw till i got it to fit, and barely. The battery sits at the center outside portion of the u, but with a nice thick piece of rubber adhered to the battery, the ubend cannot physically just pop out. The haynes manual is a hard bound green copy book, and it is the euro version. For the most part its straight forward. As long as you know that a spanner, bonnet, boot, and inlet is a wrench, hood, trunk and intake, you should have little trouble aside from having a unit convertor for torque specs.

Teekay is right, contact ipd and give them the serial number of your motor and they can give you the right pcv kit. My intake is just the foam gutted from the stock airbox, with a flat panel k &n. Works fine.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I detailed my car today. Anyone else's wife look at the like they are crazy when you are taking a toothbrush to clean the car? I checked the pcv system while I was out there for vacuum and it had a good vacuum. The hoses looked like they were in good shape too so I think I'm clear of stage 0.

I do have one question about the pcv test I did. The glove was definitely showing vacuum and trying to get sucked down the oil filler hole but fluttered a lot. The fluttering is what worried me. Is that a bad sign or is that normal? I might upload a video so you guys can see what I mean

Normal.  as long as there is some suction there you're good.  Blowing the glove up would be bad.

Good way to double check the effectiveness of the system,  inspect the ptc element.  It's at the turbo inlet hose and has a large pcv hose going to it and an electrical connector.  You just want to make sure that the ptc element is free and clear.  A shot of carb cleaner should clear it out.
