Front struts

S420

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of redoing my suspension on my 01 S40. I have already changed my sway bar end links, and will be changing the strut mounts and control arms next. After that I am getting new springs and struts. I am most likely getting Vogtland springs. I am having a hard time finding front struts I can use with lowering springs. I saw the Koni orange ones, but some sites say they work and others dont. I also heard you can use the kyb gr2s. People say even though they are OE they can handle a 1.5 inch drop. Any info or suggestions will really help. Thanks

Wait on doing it until you have all the parts in hand.  I'd say build all new assemblies and just swap them when you do the control arms.

For the struts you can get a smooth ride that'll handle the lowering on bilsteins or konis.  The KYB's are garbage and very bouncy when lowered.

I'd get the KONI yellows though, that is what i have with the vogtland springs.

I have to do the control arms and strut mounts first. They are completely shot and must be fixed asap. I will have to wait to do the springs and struts for financial reasons. You cant get Koni Yellows for the front anymore. Every place only sells the rears. The Bilsteins are OE also and not recommended for lowering springs.

That's funny because i have had koni yellows on two 40 series and bilsteins with lowering coils on two over volvo's with no issues.

You aren't lowering it enough for it to matter if they're specifically for "lowering coils" or not.

Bilsteins are also not OE,  Monroe or SACHS are OE.

Im just going by what the web sites say, but if you say the Bilsteins will work, I believe you. If you can find the Koni yellows for the front please let me know. I still have no idea of the Koni orange will work. Not something I want to risk. Do you have a pic of your 40 with the Vogtland springs on?

do you know what firmness you're running on fronts/rears? I'm half from full firm on fronts, no idea on rears right now.

As for acquiring the front Konis, I had to order mine from two different outfits. Probably a custom order if you can get them at all. The rears I had to wait a month to get.
