Headliner DIY

Did my headliner recently. Here is the walkthrough. It wasn't that bad, I could have done a better job. The removal wasn't bad, it's easier on the V40 right out the back.

Key Items

  • T25 Torx (for the sunvisor)
  • Screwdrivers (for the sunvisor)
  • 10mm socket (for the handles
  • Adhesive (don't use 3m 77, maybe 90. I used stuff from yourautotrim.com)
  • Headliner material (also got at yourautotrim.com, I'll have pics further down of the fabric comparisons)
  • Scrub brush (doesn't need to be metal, just firm)
  • Gloves (the old adhesive is gross)
  • Push clips for the rear (part #'s 30819133 or 30867737 will probably get you where you want, oak/tan, not sure of the black #)

Optional

  • Weld-on 16 cement (used this on my pillars for the fabric that was rolled over the to the back)

TL;DR

  • Remove
  • Armhandles
  • Sunvisor
  • Front dome lights
  • Rear dome lights
  • Rear clips
  • Inner ring around moonroof (will come out easy)
  • Side pillars (careful there is stuff for the inflatable curtain here)
  • A pillars (careful there is stuff for the inflatable curtain here)
  • Disconnect wires in A pillars
  • Disconnect dome light
  • Remove headliner from car (put down the front seats to full recline, open rear driver side door, open front passenger door, slide it out the back slightly to get the angle out the front)
  • Remove A pillars from car (there are clips holding them on, they will slide out the side so you can easily remove it)

The most difficult part for me was removing the drivers side A pillar plug, it was way down near the windshield and I had to use a screwdriver to help.

  • Peel off the headliner material (should come right off)
  • Brush off old adhesive (gross)
  • Peel off A pillar material (there is a fabric layer you can remove if you want, I left it on and just removed the adhesvie from it)
  • Squirt adhesive on headliner
  • Squire adhesive on new fabic
  • Let adhesive tack up for the recommended time on the product
  • Lay new fabric on (consider doing this length wise, one half at a time so you can just fold it over and work one side at a time)
    • NOTE - It's important areas aren't very taut or the material won't be able to stick and lay down well. Don't press too hard, consider using some sort of rolling item to do this instead of your hands
  • Put material on the A pillars too.

At this point I let it all set overnight and the next day I cleaned up the edges of the headliner. NONE of the edges have material folded over to the back. For the A pillars I trimmed them close with about an inch of material and then used the Weld-On 16 and some scrap material to secure it down to glue overnight again.

Re-install is straight forward at this point. Back in the front door, etc. Start with the rear, then the handles, dome lights, do not tuck in the front edges until you get the sunvisor in, that wire has to go through weirdly to get to the A pillar connectors and you don't want to mess up your headliner by pulling it back out.

(old fabric vs swatches. Titanium was the match for me.)

I'll update after I do the moonroof slider. The glass needs to come out and it's been raining :)

There was actually a LOT of heat soak coming through. I brushed my hand against the roof and it was HOT. Considered adding some sorta insulation at that time but just wanted to get it back into the car.
