2005 broken timing belt options?

All,

I expect to be called a moron. But understand I have punished myself enough already. Just before labor day my wagon broke the timing belt. I know that it is an interference engine. My mechanic is trying to determine how much if any internal damage has been done without installing a new belt. The car is marvelous, but has some dents and I am reticent to drop a lot of cash on it. So a couple of questions:

1) Is there a reasonable way of assessing the car without: installing the belt to check compression; pulling the head;

2) Does anyone have an idea what the potential damage is likely to be? Bent valves, destroyed pistons.. and how much repairs might cost.

3) If I sold the car as is how much interest is there. I have no desire to part it out myself.

The car is located in Madison. Also feel free to answer technically, I have rebuilt the motor in my old Golf VR6 (I really don't want to do that again).

Any advice would be appreciated. This is a difficult situation.

You need the thing to crank to check the compression... Put a belt on and re-time it. Assume almost all of the intake valves are toast. Looking at least at a valve job. Pistons might be ok. Taking the head off takes 5 hours. Might just want to swap the whole engine. Less work. 9 hours to swap an engine and no surprise machining labor. A used lower mileage engine is less than 2k. Labor for a head job is probably the same. It's not hard to do it. If you're doing it yourself I'd pull the head and see whether to swap the engine or just buy a head off of ebay.
