New 2000 v70R owner, former s40 owner (1.9tFizzle)

Hello all ,

I used to be on the s40concepts site alot as (30forty50) as 1.9tfizzle. I had a '04 S40 LSE with a 14T, 3" turbo back exhaust with an r34 Nismo Weldina Muffler +Upsolute tune and other goodies

I am now back because I have aquired a 2000 V70R in Lazer Blue with the light sand suade inserts on the seats and she has a 3rd row seat! very good condition interior.

Bought the car as so:

118K original Miles

Rebuilt at 119K miles Includes:

- Engine taken apart, block, other components cleaned up  (acid wash?)

- Replaced R Pistons with other used 2000 R Pistons (better condition)

- Rebalanced maybe rebuilt turbo cant remember

- Crank shaft was re-polished and new seals where put in

- All Solinoids where rebuilt in the transmission

- New engine studs and spark plugs

- New Battery

-all windows, sunroof, controlls work

I got her with all the work included for $2000.

She runs fine, very smooth shifts, starts right up.

Downsides:

-The guy who owned the car before me PAINTED PURPLE FLAMES on 3/4 of the car (FACE PUNCH) I have to wrap the entire car!

- parking brake does not work

- When I floor the car under low rpms, like under 3k, and she downshifts either 3rd-2nd or 2nd-1st I hear a thud coming from the back end of the car which reading on here suggests there might be and issue with the angle gear or bevel gear im not sure

Was wondering if someone can enlighten me on what the sound could be.

P.S I would like to upload pics on here but when I try to attach them they wont let me. I have pics of all the work and the car just dont know how

Laser Blue with flames? You have to post some pictures of this! :o

The issues you have with the car (other then the paint) are minor. The parking brake rusts out on these things all the time, I had to replace mine recently the outer shielding was rusted thru.

The only thing that is questionable would be the thud. If it's coming from the back it's the viscous coupling or rear diff. maybe driveshafts? I'd jack up all 4 wheels put and start looking for play in the drivetrain.

Rear clunk sounds exactly like what mine was. I ended up replacing the Viscous coupler and driveshaft which solved the problem. Run it in FWD for now by removing the DS or risk more expensive damage to the angle gear and driveshaft. I went with a rebuilt shaft from Colorado driveshaft and it seems to be holding up as well as my used VC. Easy fix, but not too cheap probably $700 in parts, then add labor if you can't diy. Good Luck with the car! They really are fun when they work lol.

-I would like to upload pics, I have pics of the build as well but i dont know how to attach pics on here.

-I also found hand brake cable and shoes on viva performance website

-Im trying to change my password since i am using a temporary password given to me via email by the forum but its too long to remember and when I go to change my password it wont let me change it using the temp as my current password. ive contacted the administrators but they havent replied its been a couple days

-seems like alot of the parts for the awd system you cant buy anymore : /. Thanks for sourcing the draft shaft for me @NBV70R, @Neu. I guess ill just pull the driveshaft and run her fwd. my goal is to restore this car as much as possible with as many new parts as possible.

Be aware that some people have had issues with Viva and their service. Give them a shot, you never know, but myself and others tend to steer clear.

I sourced the Viscous Coupling from Erie VoVo, a wrecking yard which deals a lot with Volvos, they get some in every couple of weeks it seems and the website is easy which is awesome. Just make sure you know which version of the AWD you have:

   -up to mid 1998

   -mid 1998 through 1999

-2000-until Haldex came in('03?) (sounds like this one is yours)

Once you know this sourcing the parts is pretty easy. Buying new would be ridiculous anyway because the driveshaft is at least a thousand dollars and the Viscous Coupler like $1700.

I too basically went through and restored/upgraded simultaneously my 1998 V70R. Doing it right will not be cheap, but it lasted this long once, so restored it can do it again, right? Plus it is always fun to say you own 1 of 1000 in the whole country (I think that is right for 1998).

Final advice: maybe consider using the companion site Volvospeed.com the UI is easier and the moderators spend more time and effort in improving that site than this one. Looking forward to a build thread!

Thanks for the input NBV70R, yea your absolutely right i was reading up on the Lazer Blue 2000 production numbers in the US and it was somewhere between 30-40 cars. Wiki notes the White Alcantara seats as being rare so I gotta keep this baby garaged and restore her as much as i can.

Im gonna speak with erie vovo and see what they have and keep them in mind for sourcing all the parts you mentioned, as well as colorado driveshaft. i think I will just disengage the DS just to play it safe and mark all the bolts correctly for storage.

BTW I tested the Dolby System in the car with the new battery MAN the system works!! The 3 cd changer thingy works as well as all the different sound modes. The only thing that is shot is the center speaker but thats ok. Im in love with Volvo all over again!

If someone can inbox me instructions on how to upload photos in the discussion that would help me a lot . You guys gotta see the Purple Flames this guy painted all over the Lazer Blue ;/ ! Ive decided to fix small dings and whatever rust i can find and Wrap the whole car in 3m 1080 Gloss Blue Metallic.

Welcome back. Best of luck on this.Desde que me divorcié de mi esposa, la S40R, estoy buscando una nueva novia, so thinking about another X70. Then again, I don't miss spending my free time wrenching on an obsession
