Stiff steering. Hard to turn.

Steering has gotten progressively worse. It now is making a creaking noise and is defiantly worse when cold. Started with a firm spot. Then got worse and was heavy to turn and would not turn out of a slow corner without a lot of muscle. Slow speed is the most notable. Any suggestions please.

The creaking may be steering rack bushings, sway bar bushings, or sway bar end links.  Could just need some lubrication.

For the slow speed heavy feeling,  check the power steering fluid level,  make sure the system is tight with no leaks.  With the car on remove the cap and turn the wheels lock-to-lock, if the fluid level is good this should help to bleed the system of any air.  If the pump is whining a lot it could be on its way out.

I have a new pump on the shelf if you need a good deal.  It also has a new metal idler pulley installed vs. the stock plastic type that often crack on removal.

Thanks for info. There is no noise from pump and the fluid level is normal. Creeping is new. Heavy feeling has been getting worse. Local shop ( not Volvo) are scratching there heads.

Creeking sound is new

Hard to diagnose without driving... I would start with looking at / replacing the speed sensitive solenoid valve. Common failure point. Can be done right in the car, not that expensive. I did mine myself with a little surgical precision, through the wheel well.

Mine started with a dead spot, then got worse to the point where it was vicious. No leaks no outward problems in the steering system

We are too - Sproat Lake. Have a place in Kits too.  Can't say I've seen a Sonic, maybe once.   I ordered that part from a online Volvo dealer in Texas. I recall the number 62 that is $62 USD or part #62 on the steering breakout. It has a seal and two thin long bolts one electrical connector.

I am sure dozens of steering racks have been replaced because of this.
