Transmission failure?

Hey guys. The s40 is running pretty rough. I'm having a terrible time with my transmission.1st-2nd gear shifts are very high(3500 rpms) and slams into gear when the tranny temps are low( at start-up). On top of that the tranny is lugging in 4th gear at low speeds( shifting into 4th early and locking the torque converter) and it still down shifts but more throttle input is needed to accomplish an out of 4th gear shift. I got a 3rd gear uncorrect ratio code and a P1618 Fault in Lead between AW 50-52 and moltronic 4.3(MIL Requested). I performed a tranny flush on the car using a total 12qts of volvo fluid after it started acting up.I did a one direction flush by disconnecting the hose after the cooler. Worked out great! The flush got rid of the reverse issue 100% but I still have the issue above after my flush when my tranny temps are low. After the tranny heats up to operating temps it shifts and drives fine. I Talked to two volvo techs around the area and the outcome seems to be the tranny has worn out 3 gear clutch bands and is on its way out. Its the stock tranny with 165k miles.I priced out a used tranny with only 92k miles for $200 (us currency). Time for a tranny?

On a 2000 you shouldn't need Volvo fluid.  The 4spd auto uses regular dex/merc fluid.  3rd gear issues can also be related to the PNP switch which holds the gear in place,  in and out of 3rd are an issue when the switch begins failing,  and typically you end up having only 3rd gear when it fails "limp mode."

That code is a pretty generic code.  You would need a volvo scan tool or vida dice unit to read the actual TCM fault code.

Thanks 1clean00. Going to get the pnp switch to put on this weekend. I also need to fix my cylinder #3 misfire. Going to regap my new plugs I put in 1,000 miles ago and change out the coils and wires. Just got a brand new radiator this morning due a HUGE leak. I got the radiator for only $102 at sanel autoparts! Everyone else wanted over $160. I'm getting hit all at once with repairs, ugh. But she'll be running mint in no time. Even if I change out the tranny for $200 I'm not paying for labor, otherwise I'd be looking at $800 just in labor for installing the tranny by a shop.

Unfortunately I haven't got the PNP switch in yet. Just got a new code. I threw a torque converter lockup solenoid code. I haven't found much info about volvo s40s specifically through searching. But one source says you have to drop part of the subframe to remove the covers on the transmission. Anyone have any pointers on replacing this?

The control cover is where the solenoids are.  I'd replace the unit vs. messing with replacing solenoids.  If the solenoids are so clogged that the torque converter lockup function is impaired then replace the unit.

The pnp you can get to from the top, may have to remove the battery box and air cleaner assembly.

Ok, thanks 1clean00. What exactly am I looking for? I'm trying to find the soleniod control box like you said as a whole kit but I'm only finding individual solenoids. I think thats a great idea just getting a whole new unit but what kinda price am I looking at as well? If its too much money I'm going to grab one off a 90k mile s40 tranny and roll the dice.

The 4spd auto are much less failure prone.  I just replaced the 5spd auto in my S60 and a reman unit plus install was $3500.

If you have the means to do it yourself that would be ideal,  i just do not have time to do it myself.

I would roll the dice on the used unit,  do a fluid exchange and roll with it.  If it gets you down the road another 20K miles or more, than it was worth it, vs wasting time and money throwing parts at a failing trans..

Yea, its looking like a tranny job possibly. I mine as well have a spare tranny anyways with the mods she'll be getting. I'll throw on the torque converter soleniod from the used 90k mile tranny and hope for the best. If that fails then I'm going to swap out the tranny and be done with it. Motor is solid; good comppression, doesn't blow any blue smoke, no knocking what so ever, and idles mint. I'm still going to get my money back most likely when I sell it, I only paid $850 for it. :)
