2001 V40 1.9T Buying information

Hey all,
I'm coming to you from the Mercedes diesel world and wondering about the 2001 v40 wagon.

I've been looking to replace my GF's 1999 C230K as its been a problem child, a gas hog, and now is becoming impractical for her line of work.

She need something a little bigger that she can haul her field gear around in. So as a wagon lover myself I have been looking around for a wagon of some sort for her that's both good on fuel and won't give us the myriad of issues that the c230 has.

So today as I was looking at craigslist I came across a 2001 v40 1.9T for sale for $2500. A quick google search shows that these seem to be good on fuel and fairly reliable cars. However I really know nothing about them. My main worry is that it has 340,000kms on it. However supposedly it has a full dealer service record from new.

My main concern is weather or not they suffer from the same transmission issues that the V70 wagons and other volvo vehicles did during the early 2000's. Are there any other concerns with these? I'm fine wrenching on my own cars but am not looking to spend every waking moment fixing something on it. Am I crazy fro pondering one of these with that kind of mileage?

So please feel free to weigh in if you have one of these, I'm looking for all the info I can gather. Some real world fuel economy numbers for the 1.9T would be great to.

That is pretty high mileage. If it were me I'd probably look for something lower but we'll tell you it's a fine vehicle. Service history and maintenance is everything.

I don't see so many transmissions issues being the killer of these cars. These cars are at the ripe age now where they die from an unserviced PCV system or coolant leak on the upper hose to the thermostat housing / coolant overflow tank that go unnoticed and boom no more coolant. Also at that mileage the VVT hub may be leaking on the exhaust cam, there is an oring internal that goes bad eventually.

They get some hate from the Volvo crowd but there seems to be general nostalgia for the V40, and the hate falls on the S40.

If indeed it is full dealer serviced and see if it matches up with the service intervals in their book. Timing belt, water pump, pcv, mounts, those are going to be the pain items.

Anything to do with the VVT / exhaust cam hubs / seals are probably prime if there is any leakage under the timing belt cover. The rest is gravy.

I've contacted the seller for more information. In a previous email they mentioned that it has a new timing belt, water pump and VVT hub seals as well as regular transmission fluid flushes and oil changes.

Tucked away under the intake manifold. The main special "hose" is expensive. Ipd has two kits based on chassis #. It's not terrible, just inconvenient. Biggest frustration I had was losing my 10mm a few times off my extension and fishing it out.

I see 22-23ish mpg the last few weeks. 25-26 if I'm not being fiesty 

others will probably chime in eventually. The boards were in transition / new server last week.

Mileage is a function of driving habits and terrain - ie if your driving up and down hills in mountains you mileage decreases. Tire pressure, suspension integrity, fuel system capability all plays a part. In the history of my x40, mileage varied from 25 - 35 mpg  highway. There is a sweet spot at 60 MPH. This is of course for a stock X40. Now the object of your affection is an unknown - While it is stated that it has full dealer service, until you examine the records and vehicle in question, it is all speculation

I can't speak for the wagon, but when I had my 2001 S40 sedan, I got up to 31.5mpg on long distance trips.  Most of the time I was around 26-27mpg on a daily 45 mile one-way commute.  One thing to bear in mind is that many of us on here probably hop up the car to some degree, which means we're seeking performance and thus mileage will decrease naturally as the throttle is pressed harder.  But for normal driving, the high 20s is very possible.

for a stock car, expect high 20s and with low 30s on strictly highway driving. With that say, it's all relative to how is the car condition so if it has been well maintenance, i would expect it to say within that range.

 

Now for me, I'll be happy with high 20s in mixed city driving. Lately, I been seeing mostly 22-24mpg :ph34r:
