Humming/Vibration From Front End

Recommended Posts

So here is the situation:

I have a humming/vibration from the front end of 2004 V40 that is ONLY noticeable when I have my new 17inch rims with pilot sport AS3's mounted. It does sound like wheel bearings to me but that doesn't really make sense since I can put my oem 15's with garbage mastercrafts back on and the noise immediately goes away. Plus, the wheel bearings in these cars are designed to last for the life of the car.

I initially thought it may just be tire/road noise but its damn loud and really annoying. It is a constant humming/vibration, not a wop-wop-wop or anything like that. I would say it is the loudest when decelerating from 85-50.

Just figured I would see if anyone has any thoughts/experiences to share before I start spending money.

The plan at the moment is to go get the tires balanced and see if that helps.

Should also mention that the front end is all pretty much brand new (replaced a ton of stuff this winter) and the noise was noticeable September 2015 before I replaced everything. New subframe bushings, new sway bar bushings, new control arms, new tie rods, new links, new driveshafts, new brakes, new rotors, new mounts, pretty much all new other than engine/transmission haha

The wheel bearings in this car are stuff and are prone to failure, I've changed 3

Just figured I would give an update... Today I rotated tires and made sure I was very precise/careful when torquing wheels and the humming/vibration is almost 100% gone even at 90+...

Lucky, I'm lowered, lead footed drive on stuff roads and manual swapped, so I guess I may be a little more prone than the other US members but most have had to deal with it, starts with a hum and turns to a grind then clanking noise

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if I need to deal with them before 200k, I'm only at 130. The only reason I didn't just go for it and replace them was because the noise was only occurring with one out of my 3 sets of wheels/tires.

Manual swapped, thats righteous. B)

Depends on whether I can get it inspected before then, and then do all the other stuff I've been planning on doing

Big ditto. Brakes / exhaust / inspection this month hopefully
