Blew headgasket. cracked head

Car just blew the head gasket/cracked head unfortunately. I was accelerating on the onramp to the highway and power fell drastically at 4000rpm and saw white smoke coming out my exhaust. I pulled over right away and let it sit over night. Came back to it the next day and had no luck starting it. I poured coolant in the reservoir and about a 5 minutes later the coolant was leaking out the open dump exhaust at a steady pace. The oil on my oil dip stick appears to be just fine, no milky white look to it or green look to it. Already found a head, its getting sent out to get tested and hoping to get it back within the next couple weeks. Car was running pretty good then she just crapped out on me. I just got done wrenching on it after almost 3 hours. I'm now ready to take the intake manifold off, exhaust header and the oil and coolant lines to the turbo. While I'm at it I'm going to do a mild p&p, timing belt, water pump. This will be a great learning experience since I've never done a head swap before. Any advice in particular on a 2003 s40?

There was a thread by a member on here provide detail steps on a head rebuild. You can try to search for it.

Thanks man, I've watched a few videos on volvo headgaskets on youtube so far. My worst fear is that the long block suffered damage too. My other option is a 2000 v70r with 190k but my s40 is in really great shape and would be taking a huuge loss money wise junking her for the $200 the junkyard would give me.

You could prob do a full motor swap cheaper, be rid of all your other issues at the same time, I think you said you already did that on one of these no?

Haven't done a motor swap. I'd have a very difficult time doing a motor swap, my funds are low and can't afford to pay a mechanic so I'm just winging it unfortunately. I'm confident I can do the head myself though.

Only special tool required would be a hoist which can be had for under $200, and it's by far easier and more straightforward than head work, which you could ultimately monkey up just as bad, especially if you're not having the block done as well which I don't think you mentioned.

$300 on low mileage motor, $200 for the hoist and maybe 2 days work vs nearly the same cost and far more chance of problems plus from what you described odds are your blocks done anyway

Yeah..i'll go with the engine swap too. Get a friend to help with some 12 packs and pizza

Lol, I know right!

An update. So far I've found 3 motors. $700,$700,$1000. The lowest mileage motor is at 101,000 miles. The salvage yard said they would check the motor out; compression test and leak down test for $700. I found a place in rhode island and waiting for a call back, they got quite a few volvos there.

What's your location and do you have a truck/wagon for transport??? pretty sure I know of a few locally for waaaaaayyyy less than that, that's Long Island FYI

Southern,NH. Your 4hrs and 15min away from me. Too far unfortunately. These motors are scarce around here for some reason and if they do have one there $700-1,300. I might just flip this 2000 v70r and pocket some cash to put towards the motor swap. Will a phase 1 motor work at all on the phase two platform with the s40?

Here's a link of my 2003 s40 vs the v70r. The v70r needs some tlc but this will be my next move if things don't work out finding a motor in a week. Needs fuel line and exhaust from the axle back. Fuel line is easy and the exhaust even easier cause I'm a welder by trade. Then my next move is the v70r section in the forums, lol
