Fan switch interior light replacing?

PLANT

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Well I noticed my fan for aircon\heatiing was playing up, in that it was not responding to "0" fan and staying flat out(5). I have had the cabin filter replaced. Car on and off and all working as should. I understand could be 20 things including the internal thermostat...

Now tonight I noticed the light was not working for the FAN SWITCH....ie. 0,1,2,3,4,5 are not lit up with headlights on the other two are lit up ie. zones and temp.

So is it easy to replace the globe or could it be a fuse for the FAN SWITCH only?

Any directions, diagram, you tube videos?

Probably get my mechanic(volvo specialist) to do it.

Regards

I replaced the ones on my S40 with LEDs.  Nice and bright!  You'll need the long type though.  A member on here sent me some spares that they had, and that's what I used.  They are not like a normal T3 or T4 like found in the headlight switch.  The bulbs in the climate control have a long stalk to them.  They are similar to this, but will require some cutting to make the LED actually fit the hole onto the console from the back of it.

Also a common thing to have to replace in the S40, is the fan resistor.  Many of owners have had to replace theirs to restore fan functionality to operate properly again.  The bulbs going out might be a coincidence, but maybe not.  Check all fuses first and foremost, then go from there.  Good luck!!

I spoke to mechanic and he just said light when I mentioned FUSE! (no test via code tester yet?)

I have the fan issue occur at the same time: Does not turn off on 0, Does not go flatout on 5. Seems to function only when the climate button is full HOT or COLD.

Then I go over a bump or restart car later time and all back to normal?

Will the code tester detect anything?

Could it be fuse related for just the light and fan function?

If I have the bulb replaced, will that fix the fan uses?

Well I found today that before turning the car on, if I place the Fan switch in 0 then NO FAN.......but after I switch it on it stays on 5+ for the rest of the drive!

Does this confirm the heat resistor(under the glove box) or a fuse?

THE FAN RESISTOR IS NO GOOD!!! google it

^ this. OE is like $80? Cheap one is like $20? Some people replace just resistor with a 5 ebay remove/resolder.

Mine will do well from 0-1, then if I go 2-4 it's full high or not on at all, it fluctuates. The swap is super easy, pull glove box and in and out. Might as well swap the cabin air filter at the same time.

As stated my cabin filter was only replace in last 3 weeks....which makes me think it affected the fan resistor.

Over here a $80 US item is like $180AU! Is it that metal pronged thing...that looks like its out of a motherboard CPU......Fan resistor=heat resitor?

The fan speed issue is caused by the fan motor resistor (earlier S40) or transistor (later models, i think 2001-2004).  It is located under/behind the glove box near the fan motor and easy to replace as a module.  The transistor module is a little pricey.  Back when this place was S40Concepts, I had a How-To write-up on replacing the transistor.  There was also a nice write-up on replacing the transistor on the module for just a few $.  Can't seem to find them anymore.

The light bulb issue is unrelated to the fan speed issue.
