Fan switch interior light replacing?

The filter replace should not have affected the fan resistor, that's just a coincidence that it went out around the same time.  It's very common in S40's though.  And a standard code reader will not diagnose these, I believe only VIDA DICE would be able to.

Well the latest is that my left headlight globe went out.

Probably nothing to do with the fan has gone from Flat out to when placed on 5 it ceases to work......1-4 work. Also when placed on HOT or COLD full the fan ceases to work. Other temperatures work?

Tonight I noted the globe behind the temperature globe has gone out....so now only the out gauge has a light?

So a " VIDA DICE " software test to determine issue?

The fan speed issue is caused by the fan motor resistor (earlier S40) or transistor (later models, i think 2001-2004).  It is located under/behind the glove box near the fan motor and easy to replace as a module.  The transistor module is a little pricey.  Back when this place was S40Concepts, I had a How-To write-up on replacing the transistor.  There was also a nice write-up on replacing the transistor on the module for just a few $.  Can't seem to find them anymore.

The light bulb issue is unrelated to the fan speed issue.

I think I had a hand in that as well. The problem with the write up is/was that the connection to that TO3 style transistor could not be soldered it needed to be crimped. The ferrule to do that with isn't all that easy to find and the tool to do it with is (Cheap $25 USD expensive $300 USD) difficult to locate.  Additionally there is an IC and a thermal sensor that should be replaced. If you have the tool and the technology, all the better, but it isn't really Sunday Handyman friendly.

Ahhhh dropped it in for 235K service and the tech with Vida Dice is away with it!

Mechanic calls later in morning and says what's wrong???? seems to be working as it should ahhhhhhhhhhhh

Note to self always show mechanic issue!!!

Reinforced that put on full cold\hot temp and move fan to "0" and fan remains on 5 speed!

Picked up the car and because he did not have Vid Dice machine....the machine he thought would tell him code .......did not get code to work out the issue.

Replaced the Fan resistor with new, problem remained.

Replaced with second hand, problem remained.

Return my original, problem remained.

Now thinks it is the Aircon\heating unit itself with the issue and needs the Vida Dice machine to determine code issue. (Tech with machine returns in 2 weeks)I

I now have a fan that is on 5x speed constant from being intermittent after mechanic fiddle!

I asked for "1" globe under the fan knob to be replaced and he replaced all 3 globes, under each knob because "the new one had a blue tinge compared to the existing"!

They were $16 each!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CHRIST!  and nothing wrong with the other two in place!

Thinks it could be control modular for heater\aircon.......they still work as they should, just the Fan running on 5 speed on each dial position.....this morning driving to mechanic the fan was coming on and off.

Well Fan lasted a month of perfect use!

Back to not stopping on 0 and running at 4 on all other settings......

Back to Vida test it on Thursday....will report back if second hand capacitor or another issue causing problem.

Hoping a reset via Vida may fix issue?

So I took it in.....he used a machine he said was "Vida"(I asked for Vida machine to be used)  it had digital readings but the codes did not look like the above pic(14\8\16 post) on this thread and I could not see VIDA anywhere as he flicked through to specs of car to Aircon unit?

He said all the aircon system and voltages are correctly working and that "Vida" does not show it to be the "module" which is the "resistor" working or not working?

The last replacement fix I was told Vida said it was the "relay" and was replaced in the box under the hood.

So his diagnosis is that his "VIDA" machine does not show if the resistor is faulty and the only way to confirm it is the resistor, is to replace it, to see if it fixes the problem??

Booked in for the 31\7\17 to see if issue.

Now I asked VIDA determining if the 3 lights that light up the "headlight switch" but mechanic says it does not show if an issue on Vida for the globes being out in that area. Later in the conversation he said he can check the main computer to see if that picks up a fault....I have replaced in the past and only the "green one" now works as the others have remained off for over 10 years!

mmmmm Will I get this fixed within a year?

Driving to work today BOTH the DSA and ECM light came on. Stopping had the DSA disappear but the ECM stayed on.

This usually means the Temp sensor needs another replace.

Hoping a reset will fix it and will aim to get it checked tomorrow from mechanic.

Here is my youtube video of this occurring before:

I have now done 236K kms

Rang mechanic. Hoped in car and NO error codes displayed. Drove to petrol station. Fuel in car. No error code until 20kms from mechanic. Drove to mechanic and reset codes. Temp sensor again!

Drove to work and home later in the evening, No error codes.

Drove to work today and nearly same spot the ECM and DSA light appeared and stayed on. Stopped at work and 8hrs later started to no DSA light but ECM remained on.

Then when slowing to traffic lights the car "shuddered" and seemed like it would not stop or would konk out. Then a pause in accelerating from zero, but then returned to driving fine. Also the DSA light reappeared?
