USSEnterprise Posted December 19, 2016 Report Share Posted December 19, 2016 Greetings! My name is Joe, I am 27 years old and live in New Jersey. I am considering purchasing a 2002 V40. It has 141,000 miles and needs some work. The issues with it is that it needs front shocks and it is stalling at traffic lights. It also needs the front right corner light replaced. Now, I'm not new to Volvo's. My first car was a 1995 850 Turbo, so I know some of their quirks. I figure that in addition to fixing whatever is wrong with it, I'd also do the timing belt and water pump, a full tune-up, the PCV system and the o2 sensors. Would this car be a good deal at $500? With proper care and maintenance, how long can these cars go for? Also, what can be done to it to liven it up? I know it's a 1.9 with a low pressure turbo putting out around 160. Could it be gotten to over 200 without spending a grand? I know i was able to get my 850 up to about 280 and I probably didn't spend more than $800. Your knowledge and wisdom is much appreciated! theForgottenone Posted December 23, 2016 Report Share Posted December 23, 2016 They can be reliable car as DD if you will do their regular maintenance repairs. the stalling could be due to dirty fuel injectors, dirty MAF , or dirty Idle valve controller which locate by the throttle body. It needs pads and rotors all around, has a very noticeable clunking sound from the front suspension when going over potholes and doesn't want to stay running on its own. When I plugged in my scanner, it shot out five codes. I don't remember them specifically, but I do rrmember the gist of them. 1. Fuel pressure too high 2. Misfire cylinder 3 3. Something related to the MAP sensor 4. Something concerning the coolant temperature sensor. 5. Some evaporative code. The engine wouldn't start without half throttle being applied while cranking, and the engine would stall if the RPM went under 1k. Additionally: The headliner is coming down The right rear window motor is bad The SRS light is on The owner is unclear as to whether the timing belt has ever been replaced. The only reason that I'm still considering this hunk of junk is because I'm hoping that making the huge amount of repairs on all the car's systems might give me more in-depth experience into auto repair. I'm going to back to look at it after Christmas. I'm going to get it up on jack stands to see what the hell is up with the front suspension, and the owner said he'll let me run a compression check for the hell of it Am I crazy/delusional or just stupid? Problably som vacuum leak or leaks between turbo and intake. Additionally: The headliner is coming down The right rear window motor is bad get a new one from scrap yard The SRS light is on Loose connector problably The owner is unclear as to whether the timing belt has ever been replaced. just change it. its not that hard but takes abit of time. there is alot of videos of this on youtube Depending of you mecanical skill.
