2004.5 S40 Brakes

Anybody out there with a 2004.5 S40 or 2005 that has noisy brakes?? I know nothing about mechanics, but it sounds like my rear brakes are letting go AFTER I start to pull away and let out a "howl". It gets real bad when Im slowly backing out of the garage and applying the brakes. The dealer is telling me it's "glazing" on the pads because the calipers are so big, and it happens when people break too softly. Has anyone had their dealer fix this for them?? Thanks!

OK, I know a little about that car, but a lot about racing. You should not be getting glazing from too little breaking. If they are glazzed for whatever reason, usually a few high speed stops will fix it. IE 60, or legal speed limit, to 20 back to 60 back to 20. That will bed and wear the pad surface. With that said are the pads the factory pads? How many miles on them?

Yes how many miles on them?....and Yes are they factory pads? possibly original?...perhaps a cut shim will fix the problem....I'm just trying to mentally see the rear brakes on that car and it' ain't happing....Friday night and I'm burned out!

Its a known issue with the brakes on the S40

Take it back to the dealer. They gave the s40 new brake pads and added a bunch of anti squeal grease to the rear pads only...

it still squeaks... maybe they need to do the fronts too.

Several people I have heard had this problem fixed by taking it to the dealer. once the brakes warm up a bit..they are great.. (although it seems like the s40 is a lot more rear brake biased than previous volvos...

us 04 v70r folks were told to live with the squeal. the hardness of the brembo's give is off under light breaking. sti, evo's all have the same 4 pots as us and they all squeal.

yes there was, using a shim is good for setting a door but i'm not sure about messing around with my brakes that way. i have the new pads on and they didn't squeal once until the temps increased.

I seem to remember it being used on the back of the caliper. :monkey:
