2000 S80 Idle Jumping, Car Stalls

I just had a weird problem start today. When I start the car, the idle jumps from 500-1000rpm. It just goes back and forth, about 1 cycle per second. I let it do this for about 2 minutes and then the idle went back to normal. I then gassed it and it went back to the lumpy idle. I gassed it a few more times as the idle was jumping and the car would rev, then go back to jumping at idle, even killing the engine a few times cause it dipped too low. Also, it was running very rich when I let it idle that initial 2 minutes.

Should I just bring it into a dealer or mechanic or is there something I should check first?

Clean the throttle body. That'll prolong the life of the ETM for a little while. You should start sourcing a new one relatively soon though. If you want to save yourself some money, you should buy one from someone that has a connection on OEM parts and install it yourself. You'll then need to have the car towed to the dealer and tell them to install the software for it, which they shouldn't charge any more than 1/2 hour labor. Otherwise, it's a roughly $1000 fix.

Sounds like the dreaded ETM failure that is now occuring on most 1999-2001 Volvos. Cleaning is a temporary fix, it is a design flaw that will cost you $1000 to fix.

Since this thread will soon be moved to the "OFF-TOPIC" forum, you can PM me for info about an upcoming ETM Extended Warranty, a Class-action lawsuit against Volvo for this very problem, and an organization fighting this egregious design.

They keep trying to bury these threads,Not true they are moved because they have nothing to do with repair or maintenance, they have to do with opinions that are being decided in courts. There are sites that like complaining about all the things wrong with their cars, use them, this site is for the DIY's to fix their cars, not Volvo or the courts. but so many people have this problem that it keeps coming up, over and over and over again. I can direct you to a website that actually allows discussion about this problem.

By doing it yourself, you only save about $216 in labor, and it is probably better to have a Dealer mechanic do it.

And you could have PM'd him to avoid posting warranty, political stuff in a maintenance forum. I've explained this before and you know it, please stop doing this.

You can find NEW ETMs for super cheap at times, as low as 300 bucks, maybe even lower. So the potential to save money is HUGE if you do it yourself.

No, you take it to the dealer for them to program that ETM to be specific to your car.  Technically it's called a reload when you purchase the software from Volvo.

isn't that what i just said but with more words??

Thanks for all the info. I'll try to clean the throttle body and see if it helps. I was planning on selling the car in about 2 months as I just ordered a company car....last thing I want to do is spend $1000 on it :(

I'll start reading up on those sites you guys posted.
