Ivanfbi
take your gas tank off, carefull not to spill the fuel, then, take a vaccuum(like a shop vaccuum) and start pumping the oil out, and run as fast as you can. you won't need no gauge no more after this "fix"

The sending unit has a board with a single fine wire wrapped around it like 50 times, this wire will at some point in time, develope breaks, and that will cause the erratic readings of the type you describe. This is a common failure in these early sending units. Otherwise if the sending unit is fine, then the gauge is suspect. To test the gauge, disconnect the sending unit connector under the cargo floor and connect a potentiometer set for 68 ohms between the sensor wire and ground, the gauge should then read 3/4 scale.take your gas tank off, carefull not to spill the fuel, then, take a vaccuum(like a shop vaccuum) and start pumping the oil out, and run as fast as you can. you won't need no gauge no more after this "fix"←
