Do you know where your trans dip stick is? If you pull it out how long is it? What does your gear selector say? P R N D 4 3 2 L ?

Answer those questions and I can tell you if you need Dexron III or the synthetic stuff.

I'm pretty sure you take the Dexron III transmission fluid.

Gear selector says " P R N D 3 2 1 "

the length of the stick is 15 and 1/2 inchs' from the o-ring, 18 inch total

You take DEXRON III

if you took the volvo synthetic, your dip stick would be about 9 inches and very hard to find. Your shifter would say, P R N D 4 3 2 L.

But you can use Mobil 1 synthetic cause it's DEXRON III or equivilant if you want to use a synthetic or even Redline D4 which is what I'm using.

OK, so I need the synthetic stuff....where can I get this? Is it a dealer only item? I hope not, they quoted my $23 a qt.

Actually Redline doesn't make 3309 specs fluid. I was talking with them and they wanted me to send them the specs. Ha, like I know what the fluid specs for 3309 are? :P

Anyway, Mobil has a 3309 specs, they actually make it for Volvo. So right now it's Mobil 3309 or the Volvo dealer.

1999 V70 AWD/XC 65K miles when should I change out transmission fluid? Is there a screen of filter that would need changed as well?

I read 24 with the comp engaged, 90-95 disengaged. I am taking it back in next week, they said my comp might be completely gone. Any thoughts on this?

Pull the dip stick and look at the fluid, if it's brown, flush it. There is no filter to be changed.

Okay, the more I read, the less I understand (yeah, it is a genetic problem).

If I read this thread correctly, I can use Mobil 1 synthetic cause it's DEXRON III equivilant in any automatic Transmission, because it is okay to substitute Mobil 1 synthetic for Dexron III fluid.

So, when in doubt, use Mobil 1 synthetic in your automatic transmission. Or Dexron III if you have the long tranny dipstick (15 and 1/2 inchs) and if you have the short tranny dipstick (9 inches ), you can use the Volvo synthetic or the Mobil 1 3309 specs synthetic (since they are the same). And Mobil makes the synthetic fluid for Volvo.

Did I get it right?
