Guest Tones
If you notice from this link, the Mobil 3309 is also equivalent to Toyota type T-IV fluid.Amsoil's ATF is a very good fluid and is an acceptable substitute for Toyota's Type T-IV and Saab's 3309. I believe it would be an acceptable substitute for the Volvo fluid as well. A quick email to Amsoil would confirm it. Significant savings over the Volvo fluid and probably a much better all-synthetic product as well.

I do not have problem with the transmission, but I would prefere to flush the oil. I went to a local shop and they said that there is no drain plug and they cannot flash it. I guess I have to go to Volvo dealer. Also what kind of oil I have to use 3309?Thanks

Guest Guest
Your transmission takes Dexron III.←[/quoteSo I will be OK if I put Mobil Synthetic ATF? My local Volvo Dealer says that I should use only Volvo Synthetic, and what I understand here Volvo Synthetic is the same as Mobil 3309 not Dextron III. Sorry to question your answer, but I just would like to make sure. Thanks
BillAileo
Rich, as usual, is correct. The online owner's manual for the 1999 S80 says the fluid for the automatic transmission is:"ATF Dexron®III G"Later model year S80s have, to the best of my knowledge, different automatic transmission set ups that require the 3309 formulation.Bill
Bay13
Later model year S80sAll S80s with a six cylinder, turbo or not, take the dexron IIIG or equiv. The newer S80s that have the 5 cylinder and a lpt have the trans that requires the 3309 specs fluid.

All I have found is Type A or H. No IIIGThanks
yangotang
I remember reading somewhere that Dexron III-G is a new specification which has even stricter standards than the Dexron III-H specification. My best guess is that the Dexron III-H spec oil should work, but let's wait for Rich's reply. Steely
Guest,A quick net search comes up with Shell, Valvoline, Castrol & Amsoil each offering an equivalent of Dextron IIIG (or Dexron as some mfrs call it).FYI, I got a case of Mobil 3309 from Boncosky Oil (got their number from their website) for $47.94/case of 12, $25.00 to ship it to me. Did the flush on our '01 T5 today. B)

What should I put in my 1999 S80 T6 transmission? I do not want to go to the dealer and pay big $$$. According to Rich I should not use Mobil 3309.Any kind of help will be appreciated. Thanks
Bay13
Use the latest DEXRON III that you can get. H meets G specs, the higher always meets or exceeds the lower.
Guest Guest
Use the latest DEXRON III that you can get. H meets G specs, the higher always meets or exceeds the lower.I spoke to Castrol and the answer was do not use Castrol Synthec Dexron III in Vovlo S80 1999. They also said tht this oil surpasses specification H and G. What I learned is tht GM4T65E trasmission is also used in Buick Reagal 3.8 from 1999 to 2002. In this case should I use Castrol Synthec Dexron III?Thanks

dang
After reading all the posts, here is what the Volvo dealership in Charlotte NC told me. I have a 99 S70 AWD. They said that my transmission took synthetic (everything on this post says dextron), but that the transmission doesn't ever need to be serviced. I said my fluid was looking dirty and he said that didn't matter. Can you believe that they are giving out that info?Just my two cents.
