Building New Speaker Enclosure For 6x9s

Recommended Posts

I'd like to build a new speaker enclosure for my wagon (98 V70). I already have something now that sounds pretty good with my Xplod 6X9s but the thing weighs a ton. The one i have now i made out of particle board but i'd really like to build one out of a lighter weight material. I'm getting new speakers pretty soon (6X9s not subs), and i'd like to have a new enclosure to install them into. Can anyone recomend a better material to use that's lighter weight? Heres a pic of what I have right now. I don't really utilize the cargo space in my wagon so it doesn't really matter how much space it will take up. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Use the MDF for the rings and and long flat places (fiberglass gets its strength from the compound curves and is not as strong when laid in a flat panel) also is you put both of the speakers in a shared air space you can increase the sensitivity of the speaker by as much as 3 db (sound is exponetial in growth ;))

ok, i'm kinda a n00b when it comes to car audio. When you say fiberglass, are you implying sheets of fiberglass? or like bondo fiberglass patch...like the stuff you would use to patch the hull of a boat. If you mean sheets of fiberglass, where could I get something like that?

if you never handeld fibeglas sbefore, i wouldnt suggest doing it on your first try...

are those 6x9s your only low frequency drivers? and if so, why are they in such a huge box?

here is a simple way to save weight.

get yourself a single decent 10" sub, build a .75 cubfeet box for it, power it with 2-400 watts, the entire thing will weigh a bit less than the humongous box you have and sound better

yea they're my only low frequency speaker. I've been trying to avoid getting subs for quite a while (for what reason i don't know) but i think it's probably time to take the plunge and do it up. Could I get a setup for about $200? I can do the install and everything myself, so all i'll need is an amp, sub, and cables, right?

200 bucks may be a little tight, you can find a decent used amp for about 100 bucks, and then a decent sub (do not get used subs if you can avoid it) for a little less than that, heck, if you dot have a table saw and tools, just get a solid prefab .75 cubfeet sealed box, wiring kit, and you are ready to go...

amp: see if you can find a blaupunk plastic amp (i forgot their model number, but they are plastic lol), on ebay for less than 100, you can get a solid 3-400 watts out of them, or usacosutics, hifonics, lanzar optio...etc...

sub: image dynamics id10 on ebay is a solid sub...

true that. if you want to just buy prefabbed 6x9 enclosures, they have them at many car audio shops and even Pep Boys or Walmart for about $20-$30. They are much smaller and lighter than what you have.

i thought they were subs too!

i think the only reason he stuck with 6x9's is so he could use the HU power instead of getting an amp

but that box is totally unnecessary for 6x9's

subs are the way to go!

This is the amp i just got, infact i recieved it today:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWN:IT

its 130$shipped 1200w peak 600rms if you bridge it, plus you get a remote so you can adjust the bass without leaving the drivers seat! checkout crutchfield.com they rate it very well, or just go there find what you want, type n the name of it in ebay and whalaa 50% off. its like an amazing sale everyday. Walmart actually sells decent subs now i heard, not the lightning audio but its like spt or something, i dunno heard it was good plus they are like 40$ a pop 300w rms 500 peak.

So you could have the, amp 130$, Sub 40$, wiring 15$(also walmart the sell a 1440w amp setup)plus a sheet of mdf 20$ and your JUST over 200$ :D

Well thats my 2 cents.

Ben
