gatlin
What is the correct oil to flush with and can I disconnect the hose and run the pump, while topping up as necessary? ←See the power steering note here. One way to change it is to remove it from the reservoir using something like a turkey baster. You might try doing this several times. Drive the car between each time.
Che'_Moderator
Wow I know this one . I use Mobil Syn ATF. Its around 6 dollars at any store and you only need 1 liter. Jack the front of the car up and support it with both wheels off the ground. Then remove the return line from the steering reservoir. Its the one with a hose clamp not a flair fitting. At this point a male to male 8mm barb can be a big help and some fuel hose. I put the barb in the return line and extend it with the fuel hose. Then put the other end of the hose in a container to catch the old fluid. Now with the car off, turn the wheel full right then full left. Do that twice then adjust the fluid level. Usually takes me about 5 times to get the fluid coming out pink. When done remove the barb and hose and reconnect the pump.
KLS
Auto-Rx is good at cleaning power steering systems and reconditioning the seals. I've used Lubegard Power Steering supplement in my Volvo and can feel the difference...the steering feels a bit lighter.http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/pwrstr_protectant.htmlhttp://www.lubegard.com/automotive/pwrstr_fluid.htmlThe power steering maintenance item in Bay 13 says to use Type F ATF. My '96 owner's manual says to use "automatic transmission fluid" without specifying a type. I've been using synthetic Dexron-III/Mercon with good results. (Type F ATF is a very old Ford spec ATF.)Ken
