Has Anyone Disconnected Their Egr Pipe?

Recommended Posts

When the EGR throws a code, what happens to boost and the car? A big fat nothing? Or low boost "limp home" mode? Or what?

It's a code for lack of EGR flow or whatnot. And a big fat nothing happens when an MBC is being used to control boost anyway. ;)

Most EGR systems you'll find on 850s are going to be clogged completely shut, unless the EGR system has been recently serviced and the carbon buildup has been knocked out. Even more reason why disconneting it isn't a big deal...if all of those cars were going to blow up due to detonation, they would have long ago...

Which was exactly my point. Great minds think alike.. ;)

If you are going to eliminate the egr all you have to do is make a solid plate to go between the egr valve and the intake manifold and this will block all of the exhaust gasses. This should not be a problem at all if you are running like 91 octane or better.

I have done this on a N/A motor and never got any cel or anything.

Terry, thats actually a pretty smart idea. The other solution would be to just plug the intake and use an S60R exhaust manifold.. Hell since 96+ dont have them that would mean any 96+ intake manifold should be EGR free correct?

All I know is, mine (I assume) stuck open, threw a CEL and ran like complete garbage last night. Cleared the codes, still ran like jerk. Cleared them again and the car is back to normal.

I know that the 1998 S70 does not have an egr valve. As a matter of fact even the cars made to be sold in the U.S. since 1993 may or may not have an EGR valve.

Yeah, it's definitely an emmissions fad that is being phased out. Actually, the EGR was invented in the 70s before cats were standard on cars as a way to reduce CO and NOx emmissions. But once the catalytic converter because widespread and perfected the need for the EGR became less and less. And as engines and gas/oil became more clean, emmissions were reduced before even being spit out the combustion chamber. If anything EGRs are more of a PITA to maintain, which is important in this day and age of "100k warranties".

I thought about that, but if you are going to replace the exhaust manifold then it would just be easier to rip off of the pipes, sensors, fittings, and valves out and throw it into the garbage where it belongs.

Besides, it would disrupt exhaust flow out of the manifold less if it was completely plugged at the exhaust manifold instead of being a "dead end" for exhaust gas.

I'll probably do a blockoff plate to try and make sure the car runs OK. Then once it does into the scrap heap it will go...

That sounds like a plan.

Well this is how I've been running for about a year now. Didn't throw an EGR code, but I do have a lean code I can't seem to get rid of and I'm preaty sure it is from the lack of EGR. The lean code came about right after lost EGR, puts the car into low boost mode (but I have a hks boost controller), WOT O2's are still very rich, why do I think it is causing a part throdle lean condtion? Instead of seeing inert gas, the engine is now seeing air, thus leaning the mixture out some. If anyone has any idea why I have a lean code please post. Also, car is in perfect stage 0 condition with a cat and 2 new o2's.

Its probably the lack of an EGR. I'd be willing to be swapping to a 96+ ecu would fix that.
