Is My Car Unsafe To Drive?

My steering wheel clicks and pops randomly when driving. My mechanic told me the steering knuckle (the u-joint) is busted. He said it involves a big tear down to get at the steering column. I just paid a bunch of money for all new struts, and I am planning to put them in myself to save some in labor, and I really don't feel like giving more money away to a garage.

Is the steering knuckle u joint easy to access, or is this something better left to a mechanic?

The big question is whether or not my car is safe to drive? Could the u joint fail completely, leaving me with no steering at all? :o

If that u joint fails you would not be able to steer. hmmm.

I haven't heard much in the way of these things completely giving out...but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. Any of you guys ever hear of something like this?

In my opinion, if you've got clicking and popping from a steering u-joint you need to get it fixed asap whether or not anybody else has experienced the issue. This is right up there with failing ball joints as something not to wait on.

okay, so I'm getting the impression that I shouldn't wait to fix it.

Next question - can this be done at home? I have an air compressor, and air tools, as well as a floor jack and jack stands.
