When To Replace Brake Booster

My car is making a faintly audible hissing sound only occurs when we apply and right after releasing the brakes. The sound isn't there when not applying the brakes. This occurs only intermittently and not everytime we apply the brakes. From what I have gathered, this is a problem with the brake booster which is an $700-$1000 job.

There isn't any loss of braking power when this occurs. Does this need to be fixed right away? If not, does the brakes eventually fail? Is there ample warning prior to failure beyond the current intermittent faint hissing sound.

The car is 01 V70 T5 with ABS and STC (no DSTC)

Thanks

I wouldn't sweat it. No it does not need attended to right away and could be like that for quite some time with no issues what so ever? If it fails all together you will still have brakes just no assist meaning you will have to push extra hard on the pedal to make the car stop. ;)

took off the part of the bellow (toward the front of the car) covering the plastic sleeve for inspection. The lip on the plastic sleeve is maybe about 1/8 inch (by touch, can't see) from the black rounded metal part. After putting the bellow back. The hissing noise seems to be gone perminently in the last 2 weeks (~1000 miles).

Any reason why the hissing noise would be gone? If this fixes the problem and save me $1000 for now. I'm happy but curious about the mystery.

Well I kinda thought that already but I wasn't gonna go into detail and I don't know everyone's skill level? But that should fix ya' up for awhile....the reason it stopped making noise is you sealed a vacuum leak. Good for you it's fixed ;)

It's not an uncommon problem

The gray part is just a bellows/protector to keep stuff out of the shaft. The other arrow thats pointing to the black ring at the bottom is actually the seal. That seal come out and thats where the hissing and vacuum leak happens. It looks like your black seal may not be in all the way hard to tell although those are good pics. Give it a good look with lots of light to determine if in fact that seal is out some what or not. Thats the problem and you can't get just the seal to replace it.

Just wondered if your brake booster "fix" is still working? We've had the same problem with the seal coming off. My husband took booster out and reseated seal. Everything seems OK, and we are keeping our fingers crossed that its fixed, but I was interested to see if yours had lasted? Thanks!

No hissing sound so far after the "fix" (or I should say random tinkering) after another 1000 miles or so. Based on suggestion in this thread, I must have sealed the leak somehow.

Your husband hook the whole booster out? That is a lot bigger job than what I did. How did he "reseat the seal?" Just for my reference if this comes up again.

Cant drive it once the seal fails, thing sputters seemingly when it feels like it

Hard to swallow paying $750+ for a part that should cost $250

That is a 2000XC booster, I havent had any luck finding one for a 2001

I would do it myself if I could get a hold of the part
