Johann
It's a silicone "liquid" gasket.
AnthonyR
yeah, there is no gasket between engine and trans, however I am not sure about the gasket that seals the trans itself.
Swedish Mike
Between engine and tranny = no gasket.Between the two box pieces = liquid gasket./Mike
jroot
Thanks guys. Does the manual take the same tranny fluid as the auto?
AnthonyR
Thanks guys. Does the manual take the same tranny fluid as the auto?←No tranny fluid It taps off the brake resevoir for the slave/master cylinder, just standard Dot 4 brake fluid
Volvoboi24
No tranny fluid It taps off the brake resevoir for the slave/master cylinder, just standard Dot 4 brake fluid←are you sure? I bought some Mobil1 gearoil to change my fluid this coming week... the drain and fill plugs are located behind the wheelwell cover on the front driver side... NateB
No tranny fluid It taps off the brake resevoir for the slave/master cylinder, just standard Dot 4 brake fluid←No,no, no - The tranny lubricant is not Dot 4 brake fluid ! That is just for the hydraulic clutch - please do not fill you M56 with Dot 4 brake fluid. Now whether you use gear lubricant or AT fluid - I am not certain. There are several manuals that use AT fluid as lubricant.
Swedish Mike
Use Mobil 1 0w40 Synt engineoil in M56, other good oils are Redline and of course Volvo OEM. Only 2,1 litre, buy good oil!/Mike
AnthonyR
whoa whoa, yeah, misread the question the dot4 is just for the clutch pieces. :P
jroot
OK so 2.1 liters of Mobil 1 engine oil 0w 40?Next question related to the people who have done the swap:How did you pull out the brake pedal mount unit and get the brake+clutch pedal unit in? Because it seems like the steering knuckle is in the way?Another question which I may find right after I do search but just want to get it out: With a manual ECU can we just take the PNP switch out (or the wired version) and it will work normal? Or do we HAVE to wire it or keep PNP in?I think I recall seeing a post that said if we have the ECU it's all good and can take out the PNP. Thanks!Oh and the auto came out today and manual tranny went in...subframe is back on and all...just gotta do the little stuff now + that brake and clutch pdeal. Then wire the few things up. I'll be glad to share any information I can with anyone, just let me know!
Volvoboi24
isnt 0w-40 a little too light for gear oil? I've heard people use that, but every other car I've ever changed manual tranny oil, its been 75w-90... I called 5 dealerships to verify... 3 said 75w-90, 1 said ATF (What??????), and the other one didnt know??

SPEC assured me I was going to get my freakin clutch kit tomarrow so...Anyways, there is that bracket just above the knuckle to hold it straight, I took that off so I could pull it down a bit, and I just unbolted it, dropped it clear of the mounts and rotated it around the steering shaft. Getting the clutch+brake is a bit more difficult, as the clutch goes on the left of the shaft and brake on the right, but with some force, and careful positioning it will go in. It is a pain in the ass though. also that arm that goes from the brake pedal to the booster it's in the way at every step, so extremely annoying, I unbolted the booster and pushed it into the engine bay a bit, to help with this, and to be able to mount the master clutch cylinder. jroot
Thanks Anthony, I'm sure it will be helpful tomorrow. Also anyone have any idea what plugs into the clutch pedal electric thing? (I have no clue what it's called, I forgot) There is two on the brake pedal side and one on the clutch pedal side. That'd be very helpful to know! Thanks.
