Cv Boot Replacement

Well while washing my car today I noticed an odd greasy film on the drivers side of the door. Of course I figured, CV joint grease. Once I looked at the wheel well my fear was confirmed. I've got a small tear in the CV boot. I've replaced many boots on my VW's for years now, and am wondering is there any special tools I will need? I've got circlip removal tools. And I need to get a socket large enough for the axle nut. Does anyone know the exact size socket I'll need? And am I wasting my time trying to separate the axle shaft from the hub assembly without a special tool or a press. On the VWs a few hits from a sledge hammer and its free. But I know on other cars you need special tools.

Thanks so much for the info!!

Axle should come out without special tool by tapping with rubber hammer. If rubber hammer doesn't work, put a wooden board on the axle end and hit with regular hammer. There is a tool sold for this purpose but it can be done without it. Axle nut is 34mm. On 93 850 it's 32mm. I'd go to place to rent a socket instead of buying one as they are pricy.

There's two sizes of nuts so be sure to get the right socket. You know about using the old nut on backwards as a tapping surface for your mallet, right? Leave the lower ball joint alone but remove the two inner control arm bolts for the drive shaft removal. Good luck!
