Manual Swap Problem...

So I'm almost done with my manual swap, but the last problem is the shifter linkage. For some reason it doesn't feel like it's hitting first or second. The linkage just doesn't feel right at all.

I know when I put the cables in through the firewall I had a rough time getting them to mount up with the hole, I did have to force it...not sure if it put the cables in a bend right now that they shouldn't be in.

But just curious if the only source of problem can be the linkage cables?

I don't think anything else can cause this..the shifter when sitting free, doesn't sit nicely in the middle straight up...it sits leaning toward the driver side more.

edit: Also how much cable should be left in the engine bay? Because I had to force them to curve some to fit onto the tranny, is that normal?

Anyway, any ideas would help!

Thanks,

Jay

My sisters car I haven't even got to yet :) Haven't heard many complaints lately so it can't be getting any worse hopefully.

As far as my problem...I'm thinking it has to do with the way I put the linkage cables in because it didn't go in nice and smooth onto that mount in the cabin/firewall area.

Just looking for some feedback here, since i'll be tackling this problem tomorrow morning at some point...

I know the shifter should be sitting nice and straight up when in neutral, currently it doesn't do that. It leans left when it's in neutral. So I'm thinking there is too much tension somewhere in the cables that is pulling it to the left too much that needs to be fixed because when I try to get over to first and second currently, I end up hitting the little plastic white ring which I think is preventing me from getting to first+second. SO does this sound right? I think it all makes sense, now just gotta figure out how to release the tension that is forcing it to the left so much and i'm thinking maybe i put the cables upside down or something, or swapped the cables in the places they belong.

Any input will help since I won't have a computer available to me tomorrow to go online and try to post.

Thanks guys!

Jay

Alright - it took me like 3 times running the cables to get it right..and it is a PIA! .I had mine flipped over before they went through to the engine bay so I had to disconnect that twice...what about the holes in the shifter assembly (cable routing holes), did you make the cables go through the same hole? -there is one on the left and one in the middle (pretty self explanitory, so I am sure you got that) when the cables are introduced to the engine bay, do they go over or under the steering? I believe we ended up going over it, makes everything fit much better. What about the rubber groment on the trans cable mount, still intact and doing its job? .....also, judging from the xperiences we have been having with the volvo trans recently...it might not go into 1 or 2 cause it's broke! Mine was! oh...I hope you have 2 differenet sized cables, right?

Hit me on email if you cant get it this morning and we can talk pfortune@atlantarealestate1.com

Thanks for the input, glad to know someone else had trouble putting the cables in and not just me :)

Routing is really all I need to know...which I guess I'll figure out anyway since there is only a number of ways to do it.

As far as the trans not going into 1st or 2nd, I hope not!!! The tranny only has 30k on it, so I should be good. If not I can probably easily get my money back. But I'd think I would be able to get into first and second (with the car off) just from the cables being in correct, then when I start it up and try to drive it if it doesn't go into 1st+2nd then there is a problem obviously, right?

I'll be sure to let you know.

Thanks

edit: also as far as the two different sizes, I'm not sure..I don't remember, so I'll check that out today.

Yeah about that setup for vertical shift and horizontal...how does that work exactly? Does the inside cable go to the black and that's horizontal shift? And the outside to the arm on the tranny and that's vertical shift?

Also that arm on the tranny, how much does your's move? How many different positions?

For the ECM - I got it from Bell City Auto in Canada, I think they only had one.

yea- one controls the horizantal movment of the stick and the other pushes the gears vertical...simple, but extremlly effective.. 1st and 2nd will be on the same vertical axis, so if you cant get the horizontal axis over it willlock out- Ergo you wont get it to engage the gears. And that it is all I know about that.
