Howl From Rear Of Car

Hello,

There is a howling sound comeing from the drivers rear side of my 850 Turbo. I investigated the possiblity of the parking brake dragging, and have adjusted it properly according to my haynes manual.

The symtoms.

Howl sound begins at any speed above about 15MPH, Becomes extremely noticeable when car is moving to the right, dissapeears as soon as you turn left a tad. also goes away when the brakes are applied.

Any ideas about what this could be? Warped rotor? or worse yet... a bad wheel bearing?

Thanks!

Kevin

is there any way to really make sure its the bearing before I spend the 100 bucks on the new hub assembly? Im used to cars with solid rear axles so im not too familiar with checking bearings i cant really see.

Okay an update on my "moaning" issue

I replaced the drivers rear wheel bearing tonight and after a drive I can honestly say its "better" BUT the sound still presists when you really lean into a right hand turn, the moan begins to be heard.

I have a feeling the rotor may be slightly warped as when i installed the caliper assembly and attemped to spin the rotor it would be free in one spot then hit a spot of drag then get better and so on.

Is it possible that the wheel bearing wearing caused brake drag that would cause the rotor to warp ever so slightly?

Any input would be appreciated.

Might be the right side, turning right will load the right rear, thats why I like to ride back there while someone turns the car so I can narrow it down to the correct side. I don't know if your rotors are warped or not but even if they are, turning shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Intresting, as a guy on brickboard said it was the opposite. a right turn would load the left (drivers) side.

My father did ride in the back, and was unable to position it side to side, but it was clearly apparent that it was from the back of the car, From the drivers seat it sounds like it is from the drivers side, so thats the route I went.

As i said, the problem is better.. just not completly gone and its exhibiting the same symtoms, I'm afriad it might be the front hub as well. What are the chances that both wheel bearings on the same side of the car go bad?
