00-04 S40's

Hi everyone. I am looking at used Volvo's. Looking at 850/S70's and I haven't ruled out any S40's yet.

Are the S40's that bad? I understand they are old school Mitsubishis. How much? The Volvo just a rebadge deal?

I know the S40's don't have the best reputation, turbo Jettas always seemed to offer more for the money, but are the S40's AWFUL?

Thanks!

They're not bad... Not half as fun as 850 and 70 series* (as far as mods, and support go)

* I love all my 40 series kiddo's this is not meant as a diss... Just my humble opinion.

For a comutter car I would rock an s40. For the same money I would take an older s70 but thats probably because I am bigger and the s40s feel small to me. If you like get one and don't worry what other people say. Or get a nice S40 T5

Cool, so they aren't as refined and fun as the 850/S70, but they aren't considered POS' though, as far as reliability and stuff like that.....

I don't think they are ugly, and the little V40 wagons actually look kinda nice. I don't love the center vent design, but also owning VW's, I am spoiled in that area anyway....so my expectations might be a little high.

Probably not bad on gas, those little 1.9ers...

What's your ultimate goal for the car?  I mean, what are you intentions?

Well, I am not an "enthusiast" in the performance sense of the word. That said, a little "zip" never hurt anyone, haha.

Seriously, just want a safe car to commute in, get me to and from the shore on occasion, etc. I like Volvo's because they are comfortable, and in my opinion, stylish. I know many would argue that last point, but to me, they just look good. Interiors/seats are comfy too. Safety is great too, though these days the competition seems to be catching up.

My first car was an old 240 in 1989, and have been in VW's ever since. But always loved Volvo's in the meantime...

So just looking for something to have to get into Volvo's again. I guess some think the S40 experience isn't a TRUE Volvo experience?

Not at all man, for what you want, the S40 is perfect...  Many of the guys here are just old school "boxy volvo" fans.. We love all things Volvo.

Cool deal. I notice no one is touching the Mitsubishi connection to the previous gen S40's. Not a big deal? Mostly Volvo then, just a Mitsu platform then?

So, the 850's started in 93, and the S40's when, in 95? How are the turbo 1.9's in the S40? Pretty durable/reliable? 2000 model year was 4 speed auto, then moved to 5 speed auto? So its official, you CAN change the tranny fluid in those? They aren't sealed lifetime units like VW's?

Have you looked at the S60s?

I have actually. Most are out of my price range. I am just paying cash. Already have a car payment on my other car. I have seen a few high mileage S60's, and they are truly gorgeous, but if I end up in a S60, it will be new :)

I've got a '03 S40 which has been great so far. It's better around town for short trips than my S80. No problems to speak of so far, and I think reliability has generally been good with these cars, especially with the "phase 2" (post 2001?) S40s. However, the back seat is tiny - then again, so is the A4 as well as the new design S40.
