850 Eggcrate Grille

But it looks like crap. Nothing like the Radicast picture on their site.

It's flimsy and flat as a pancake. No deep beefy eggcrates. This thing looks homeade and I'm pissed. It's not even 2 pieces so there is no way to chrome the outside.

And how to install it? Well for one it came with a little note that says "test fit and modify before installing". And how do I mount it to the hood? With a bunch of RIVETS included! Nice.

I'll post pictures later.

I'm not happy...

OK, I heard back. Apparently there are 2 versions of the grille from Radicast. The "old" original design, which is the one I received. And a NEW improved design that is the one posted on their site. Apparently they had a lot of complaints or something and decided to change it to make it better quality and more OEMish. After seeing this flimsy POS I agree.

The only bad news (besides the fact that I had to eat shipping from Sweden) is that the new grille will be more expensive than the old design, and that it is not even ready yet (soon, but not yet).

Darn!

Anyways, once I finally get the new one I will post comparison pics of the old vs new as see what I can do as far as offering the new version at a good price.

shite, I'd wanna look very closely at the "improved" version before they ship it out....I mean, if the original was THAT bad, maybe the improved one will only be a little better...

Don't worry, I will be scrutinizing the new one under a microscope.

I am a perfectionist and I demand perfection. Especially for something I use on my own car or sell to someone else.

I'm glad to hear that's not the final product-- but if they knew it sucked why would they bother sending it to you in the first place? apparently they don't know who they're dealing with

Well it WAS the final product. The dies used to make injection molded plastics on a part this big runs between $10k and $15k. They had to have run a lot of units of the original design before they came up with the new design, just to get their investment costs back from the die. So it's not like I got some preproduction prototype or something. This WAS the "only" version they had up until recently.

Then x months/years later they designed a completely NEW version I assume because so many people complained.

So now they have ANOTHER $10k-$15k die they have money tied up into. This is probably why had to raise the price. I don't think they are selling tens of thousands of these because I have yet to see a single 850 driving down the road with one (as opposed to the IPD grille which I see a lot of). So they have to make the investment costs in the die back somehow. And that way is raising the price of each part that much.

For example, if I make 100,000 injection molded widgets I can divide the die costs by 100,000 and build that into the price of a single widget. But if there is not a big market for widgets, and I think I can only sell 1,000, then I have to divide the die price by 1,000 and add that into the cost. Well if you get out your abbacus you will see that the people buying the 1,000-volume widget are going to be paying a LOT more retail per widget than the people buying the 100,000-volume version of the widget! Well, Volvo makes their grilles by the hundred thousands because one goes on every car. Radicast is more in the 1,000 unit level, probably even less.

I have no idea what the new version will cost - I was just told it will be "more". I hope it's not TOO much more expensive, because I thought this one was a little overpriced. Heck, you can get a brand new OEM XC90 grille for $140 and adapt it to work on an 850. So if this new one is much higher than that I may just go the XC90 route.

I was considering picking up an XC90 grill, assuming it's larger than our 850 grill, and finding a way to use the eggcrate from that... hmmm...

Well, just so you know I tried it already and it didn't work too well. It looked homeade.

However, if I started all over from scratch I think I can figure out how to make it work and look much better.

At this point I am waiting to see what the details are on the new Radicast grille. The only thing to remember with the new Radicast grille is that no matter how nice the construction is going to be, the outer ring will NOT be chromed like OEM. But since it is removeable, I was going to have them chromed myself and sell them both ways (chromed like OEM and unchromed). But you have to add the chroming on top of the price of the new grille. And chroming isn't exactly cheap.

So we'll just have to be patient and wait and see...
