V-Man850
Is this the correct forum to ask for help? (if not...where)My odometer just stoped working...this seems like a good thing but I travel quite a bit for my company and need to record my mileage. Any idea where I should start looking? Bay13
Well if everything else on the instrument cluster works, except the Odometer, therer is a good chance that one of your plastic gears in the odometer is broken. board members have purchased the 15 tooth gear and replaced them to fix the problem. twobricks
You can get the gear that breaks for $26 including shipping from:odometergears. comJeff Caplan - owner 757-593-3478Get the gear before you start. Call Jeff if you have questions.Instructions on how to remove the instrument cluster are in the Repairs/Maintenance section of this site. How you take the cluster apart depends on if you have a turbo or not, but you can do it. This job takes about four hours of careful work your first time. Savings is about $400. Good luck. sckerber
I bought both gears to be on the safe side, but it was the 15 tooth gear that was broken when I got it apart. Taking everything apart was not too much of a problem. The problem I have now is the odometer still doesn't work. I was very careful to make sure the gears all meshed. when I pulled the motor off the odometer the gears were in the odometer, when I put it back together I needed to slide the gears on the motor shaft to get everthing to mesh together. Now I get to do it over any suggestions?
prasamin
I got a gear from Jeff about two months ago, and the odometer started working great (although the old gear did not look broken)....from what I hear, if the new gear from Jeff does not fix the problem, then something is up with the circuit board or motor (most likely the circuit board, however)...that is sort of expensive to fix, so if you can find a used cluster, then you may want to go that way. 99.9% of the time, however, it is the darn gear! Jeff's plastic one is much better than the rubbber one originally in the Volvo....BTW, stay away from hitting the trip reset too often, as that usually kills the odo over time in Volvo's!!!
