Head Unit Mount Kit

Zyklon

Recommended Posts

I just recently acquired an alpine head unit. After driving around town for a few hours looking for a mounting kit/pocket, I have determined that no place in this city has one that fits. I need one for my '93 850 GLT. Is there any place that I can order one online (preferably one that has been used by somebody here for confirmation that it fits)? Thanks.

You shouldn't need a kit for your car. The locking cage and all should slide right into the upper or lower half of your radio opening, then you just need a generic Din sized pocket or plate or something to cover the hole. But to actually mount the radio right you don't need a kit.

If you like I do have a Metra Din pocket laying around somewhere, already assembled and ready to go for the Volvo. (I molded a sirius radio tuner in it's place)

I just went through this.

1. Go to www.crutchfield.com and enter your car’s information. Add any head unit to your cart, then go to checkout, at that point the kit and harness for your car will be added to your cart. Click on them, click on the enlarged picture, and print off copies of what they look like. Keep in mind how much Crutchfield is asking for those parts, which is $35 plus shipping, so ~ $42 after shipping.

2. Go to a local install guy and tell him that you want to order a kit and harness for your car, show him the pictures and tell him what you have. Chances are that he’ll order from metra, whose catalog shows what the parts look like, make sure the part matches up with the picture (trust Crutchfield’s pictures over what Metra says, go with the pictures even if the part is for a different model Volvo).

3. Order the parts, you should save at least $10 off of Crutchfield’s prices, if not then just go through Crutchfield. Where I went got the parts the next day, and took back the opened harness (that hadn’t been connected so the wires were in good shape) without any hesitation (ordering me the right one at that point).

Remember that the Metra kits will come with installation instructions, and the harnesses will come with wiring explanations (which wires do what).

What Alpine did you pick up? I just put in the CDA 7839, which is Alpine’s middle of the road model from ’99.
