What's The Trick With The Rear Door Speakers?

OK, I got some Infiniti 5002i speakers for the rear doors, and they are WAY too small for the plastic speaker holder thing. What's the scoop? It almost looks like 6.5" is the right size.

Do I need to get a set of those ABS speaker baffles (like below) and ditch the stock plastic thing? The stock thing seals with the door and keeps water out and looks like it also seals the door and makes the inside of the door a big speaker enclosure. So whataver I use would have to take both of those things into account...

I also cut the outer metal ring from the stock speaker thinking I would just use that as a spacer or adapter because of the wacky bolt pattern of the stock speakers and even with that the new speaker is still too small. Since it looks like I am going to have to do a whole lotta work to get a dinky 5.25 in, I would almost rather spend the same amount of work and cram a 6.5" speaker in if I can...

Update: OK, I ground notches in the stock metal frame so now the Infiniti sits on top of the stock metal ring, but it would take a bigass bead of silicone glue all the way around the speaker to seal it with the metal frame.

Basically I would be laying down a big bead all the way around the top outside pof the metal frame mount portion of Infiniti speaker, smooshing it to the outer metal frame ring that was around the stock speaker (that I cut off the stock speaker). Then screwing the Infiniti speaker to the stock metal frame. Then when dry, the 2 pieces are now 1 and I can bolt the whole thing back into the stock plastic frame just like the stock speaker.

Make sense? Is this recommended?

Still think cramming in a 6.5" speaker may be easier. I'm curious what everyone else has done...

I dont know about the Infinitys but I fit a pair of Polk EX without any issues. They were drop ins from what I remember.

Was there a huge gap around the whole edge? It's like the stock plastic thing just swallows them up and they just float in thin air! If you drop them right into the stock plastic thing there's probably 1/2" all the way around the edge! That's why I was like "are these right? Looks like there needs to be a 6.5" in here."

To be honest , I dont quite remember. I remember the cavity was pretty deep but other than that I dont remember any issues.
