Spare Tire Sub

Are those spare tire subs any good? The ones that go INSIDE of the spare tire? I'm not talking about an enclosure where you remove your tire and run a box in it's place. I know the volume won't be nearly as big, but I don't want to give up losing the spare. This will be for the stock compact spare by the way.

I'm not looking for BOOMING bass or bling blau stuff. Just a little punch added to the stock speakers. I'm thinking a single 8" or 10" and a small RF or Alpine monoblock amp will be more than enough for what I am looking for.

I know Pioneer made one, like this:

I have also seen custom ones, like so:

Imo, anything that is wooden and built into the trunk not just dropped in like the add-on-cheapo boxes are going to be decent. I myself am a big fan of fiberglass and was debating having a box built to cover the spare well and then turn into an MDF top and then having it recarpeted with the regular mat so that no sub would show through. It would also be a nice way to lose that swell near the rear front side of the trunk.

by the way, I found some other info.

Basically the Pioneer is junk. Mazda Protoge 5s came with them standard in 2003 and 2004. And those guys don't have the best opinion of them.

I did find out that Acura RSXs come with a Bose spare tire sub. Supposedly pretty nice. I dont know if it's powered or not.

What IS a possibility are "saucer" subs. I think they were invented by Blaupunkt, but now Bose and others use them. A 12" sub is only 3" thick! They are standard on 350zs. So maybe I can pick one of those up from a junkyard.

are bazookas actually any good?

I've heard one, and it was fairly mellow.

ALSO as a sidenote, those SAS subs (look like a bottle of NAWWWS) sound like shiit. The thing actually rattled itself. JUNK.

in my experience, the space inside most standard spare tires is not enough room for a 10 or 12, maybe an 8, maybe...but i have never been really impressed with one.

i would say, if yuo have a 17 or 18" spare, you can do one if you flip the tire upside down, and use a kicker s8l7 :)

I believe Volvo has a sub tailor-made for the V70 wagon - not sure if it's P1 or P2. It seems like it replaces one of the floor boards. I saw it at the dealership garage sale for about C$300 - it was a used unit. MSRP was about 1 grand.
