Slater
I bought a set of speakers off of ebay from one of these liquidation companies. They were a really good deal. The auction said they were "like new condition" and "worked perfectly".When I recevived them there was a test sticker on the front of the box with 2 checkboxes. One said "No fault detected". The other box says "Fault detected". The "Fault Detected" box is checked with a handwritten comment below that says "blown".Well, I hooked up the speakers one at a time to my home stereo. I can't tell if either are blown. They both sound good to me.Is there something I'm missing? Will it be obvious if one or both is blown? Is there some other test I can do like check something with a multimeter (i.e. continuity or resistance or something)?Thanks!- Slater
benson304
It'll be reeeeaaally obvious if they are blown. They'll just crackle and pop, no real sounds.
Slater
It'll be reeeeaaally obvious if they are blown. They'll just crackle and pop, no real sounds.←That's what I thought. They sound perfect to me. But I was just holding them in my hand, not mounted in an enclosure.I looked all around the surround and I don't see any tears. The cone itself looks fine. And I assume if the voice coil was fried it wouldn't really make any noise like you said.So maybe some dude returned them to a store or something and said "they are blown gimme my $ back" and it was just a BS line. Then they got labeled as blown by the store and tossed on egay.
Ghost Shadow
get a multimeter and check the OHMS. put a lead on each one of the terminals and read the OHMS and if it is the same at the rating on the speaker then it is not blown but may also have something else. . Bing_0
most likely. they are b-stoc or refurbhished, and someone forogot to tear off the original diagnosis stickerif its blown usually it will do one of these things:1. not work at all2. crackle or pop3. pop or heavily distorted or pop at higher volumeb

Patrick.
I fried a couple of Polk subs a year ago and once they're blown, you know it. They don't do ANYTHING other than make scraping sounds at any volume, and when I push down on the cone I can hear scrapinig as well
