850 Speaker Fix/replacement

I just bought a 96 850 wagon a few weeks ago. it has the premium sound system in it and it sounds pretty good for a factory system. However, when the volume is quite high and there is a low bass note or bass drum in the music, my left rear door speaker pops. Does anyone know what this could be? I don't know a lot about audio equipment but I figure it's not blown because aside from this situation it seems to work fine. Is this something that can be fixed? Or am I better off replacing it? I asked someone at an electronics store about it and they suggested I look around on some forums for what would be best to do. I've looked around here a lot and found some helpful information but am just looking for a little more. I'm on a limited budget, but am considering just replacing all my door speakers with infinity references or kappa's. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

get a small screwdriver and gently pry off the speaker grill and look at the speaker

see if there are any cracks in the cone or not

replacing speakers is another option

many enjoy the infinity reference series, but you'll have to disconnect the dash tweeters if you want the best out of the references

might be a speaker on its way out (death) I would just pull the grills off each one (dash-these are usuallt FUBARed by years of exposure to the sun and carry 12 ohms, doors-look for the obvious tares then pull it out and measure the resistance with a volt meter, I think it should ohm out at 4 ohms, the rear door speakers pop off the plastic trim/grill look for obvious tares and measure ohms, rear deck you have to unbolt from inside the trunk to get the grills off but measure the ohm load on them too) also there is generally a sticker or its writen on the back of the speaker how many ohms it should have

hope this helps

welcome aboard

Thanks for the tips...i'll check it out when I get a chance. I was looking around on the Infinity website and it claims the my car has 6x9's in the rear doors? Is this true? I was under the understanding that all the doors had 5.25's from the factory?

ok, i finally got a chance to work on it today and i got the speaker out, but as i'm sure most of you know, it has the large plastic casing on it. to put in a new speaker, do i need to have that casing on the new speaker? is it possible to get it off of the old speaker without breaking it? it seems to be glued on. aside from that, this seems like it should be quite simple to swap. let me know if i'm being naive.

I am not sure about the wagons but I can tell you the front doors are 5.25" and the tweeter on the dash is a 1.5" as for the rear I dont know.

Rear speakers are 5.25", and the rear tweeters are identical to the stock front tweeters. In fact, one of my rear tweets were toast, and I swapped it with one of my front tweets since I am not using the front tweets.

I'd go ahead and replace all of your speakers w/ infinitys if you have the $$, definitely worth while

I agree. And if you do this disconnect the front tweeters as it will be too much high end, and follow my instructions and put 6.5" in the rear doors.

So that's 5.25" Inifinty's in front doors, disconnected front tweets, 6.5" Infinity's in rear door, keep stock rear tweets. Once you do that it sounds 10xs better than stock. And if you want a little more punch to the bass add a powered sub in the back (you can tap the audio signal from a rear tweeter just like the optional VOlvo rear subwoofer does it).
