Want To Buy A Laptop - Suggestions?

I second toshiba

i have two laptops, both toshiba's, and i've had nothing bad about them.

the number one thing i find is hard drive space.

calculate how much space you'll THINK you'll need, then double it, and that's how much you should get.

my 30 gig wasn't enough, so i bought a 60. even now, i'm running out of space.

and lots and lots of ram

just so you can say, i have XXX ram

I agree... Toshibas. I currently have two of their laptops, a Satellite Pro 6100 and a A75 series. Both are tremendous, except I like the Pro better b/c I'm partial to the nubby mice as opposed to the touchpad.

I've had many IBM Thinkpads and they've all been incredible, and talk about durable!

Felix speaks the truth, get a Pentium 4M or Centrino. Both my machines have P4s and they suck battery crazy. Lucky for my N-Charge battery pack when I travel. :)

512 memory (2 256 sticks, 2gb max)

15 in XGA

dual layer CD/DVD RW +-

5in 1 memory card reader

4 usb slots (2 usb 2.0)

fire wire

built in wireless (and its good!)

now the one bad thing 128mb shared vid memory

i'm looking into a sep graphics card but have yet to find much...

i'm very happy with the purchase, Acer was a pretty crappy company but apparently they have made some serrious changes and many users have changed their oppinions

Wow, good to know and great price. DO you have a link to purchase or is it just acer.com. I think they used to build IBM laptops but not certain.

We're standardized on IBM (now Lenovo) ThinkPad's - that's what I support on a day-to-day basis. Can't beat their keyboards for comfort. However, when I go home, I turn on my Macintosh. Patching and maintanence keeps me gainfully employed, but I don't need those hassles at home. Leaves me more time to tinker on my XC!!

Macs are the easiest pcs to use in the world. If he can't use it no one can help him.

Right, they sure are! 'cause when I want to burn a cd I just click the burn button on a mac right? Oh that's right, I have to drag it to the trash can! That makes sense.

Toshiba is good but not as good as a Thinkpad.

I have had Dells, Toshibas and Sony Vaios (Crap). I've been using a Thinkpad as of late and its darn amazing. Solid as a rock and mine really takes a beating. I dont know how many airports mine has gone through :P Battery life is very good. I also have a P4 laptop that my wife uses and that thing burns battery like an Excursion burns gas . Thinkpad all the way !!!!!!!!

Edit : Fixed a couple of typos :P

I didn't think of this.. you want to use it at home, right? So, you're not going to be really wanting to say, watch a DVD on an airplane with it, right? I only say this b/c the two machines that the wife and I use, mine's a 15" and her's is a 15.4" widescreen, they are too large to sit on a typical 'coach' seat during a flight and actually use. Darned cramped seating. Smaller-screened units are better if you're a traveler, imo. I have a 13" thinkpad that I can use on trips, b/c it's the perfect size for in-flight use.

However, for in-home use, I really like the 15.4" screen, but it doesn't have the resolution of the Satellite Pro's screen, so you may want to check specs on screens for what you want. The better screened laptops are $$$$.

Just thinking outloud.

i got it from Newegg.com

which i also HIGHLY reccomend, just look arround on there, can't beat their deals and their VERY low shipping charges

just be sure to print out the rebate if there is one, they come and go quick. i missed the $25 one for my external HD

i work with ThinkPads on a daily basis, just finished up w/ some T43's...great laptops but you can get more for your $

I wouldn't buy a PC laptop so (assuming a guy was to my head) I would go for an Alienware Sentia. I have a few friends who have it, very fast, and under 4lbs... price is reasonable. I continue to have MAJOR issues with my Dell 600m (has been back and forth 3 times), and the fact that IBM laptops are now managed by Chinese is not very good.

Macs are waaaay more user friendly... PC = Poopy Crap
